So there's the 2.3, and various frankenswaps between 2l/2.3l cyl heads... That's all cool but finding a 2.3 anything that will pass smog in a 2010 is annoying.

Anyone swap a new generation engine from Ford or Mazda into an older focus chassis?

What's it take to get vct working?

My car is obd2 the new ones are all canbus.

Etb is also a possible pita.

Alternatively is there another engine with etb (2.5l?), preferably na and not appreciably heavier than the 2.0 duratec that's an easy option? The 160ish HP ti-vct seems like a pretty attractive option.

Tapatalk search is being a pain but I'll update and edit once I get to a real computer.

Preferably 2010 or newer, electronic throttle body, 200+HP at the crank, engine and whatever required to make it work (minus labor/tuning)

Edit: facts :)

Quick research turned up a miata 2l to 2.5lv swap, looks easier even than a 2.3! There's even a bit of info about a 2.3 to 2.5 Mazda 3 swap.

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=522719

Let me know if I need to remove the link or format it better please!

Duratec Performance has more info on 2.5 blocks & heads being used, haven't seen anyone do the full swap with everything working yet IIRC.

So much info out there now that i can properly search, I'm combing through various builds will cherry pick my findings and put them here.

Lightly built 2.5 with 2.0 oil pan and valve cover, 2.5l intake and fbw tb, various mix and match sensors.

Not sure about maf or exhaust ATM.

Quick update there are several success stories in Mazda 3 land, here, and fj. Compiling lists of successful swaps and components required/optional.

Other than valve springs and balance shaft delete, what does it take to rev these engines to >7500? I know without valve springs it's considered generally safe to spin a 2l dtec to 7200 rpm. What can be reached without forged pistons/connecting rods?

Assuming breather mods are in place to support it, how fast can we spin duratecs?

So I guess there's no power even with cams past 7500, and the con rods are a weak point.

But with ARP hw, bsd, upgraded value train, 2l oil pump, 8k may be possible without going dry sump.

Finishing up the list of parts, kind of scared to see the prices but likely still cheaper than a v8 swap!

Anyone know of a shop with a mandrel bender in Nova?
