For track use you'll want a dedicated race tire as they come shaved (shallower tread prevents the tire tread from ripping itself apart). They operate much better as they heat up (retain their grip). A street tire (even high performance ones) will get greasy much more quickly. There's a handful of ultra high performance summer tires tires that can be used for lapping with OK results but you risk the chance of chunking the tread. Size wise, some wider 15's or 16's (meaning new wheels as well) would actually be better for track use.

I'm interested in getting a set of rims and tires for some track use as well. My thought is to get a set of used rims (stock from somewhere), and add tires. Where do I find "track" tires that you mentioned?

Our friends at Tirerack can set you up with race specific tires.

I see what I did wrong. Using the selector for my stock 16" rims, they don't have track tires in that size. If I change the rim/tire specs, I can see some available. It looks like because the track tires come in a small range of tires, I'll need to select the tire, and fit the rim to it, and then fit the rim to my car. Yuck. I guess I'll have to make a phone call to them directly.

I suggest you get a set of ATS wheels 15x8. They will fit SVT brakes. Then you can run a 225x45x15. These are light wheels and this will improve your gearing and handling.

I PM'd Julian at Tirerack to see what they have that will allow 15" DOT/Competition tires. I have a '12 and I can't be bothered to try to figure out if the ATS rims that fit older SVT models will fit my car. Thanks for the help guys.
