K&N air filter?

Hey guys I've been wanting to order this K&N air filter, but is it the best out there or is there another brand that is better?

Also what's an oil filter?

I thought these were the same thing.

An air filter is the filter which air passes through before going through your throttle body into your engine which mixes with fuel and combusts.

Your oil filter is a filter which your oil circulates through and the filter picks up whatever debris might be in the oil. This is replaced when you get your oil changed and is usually accessed (or easily accessed) in your engine bay from under the car. (depends on the car really)

I have a K&N filter on my 2012 Focus and also had a K&N filter on my 2002 Explorer. I noticed a difference in both. The engine seemed to breathe easier with them. There is more maintenance with these filters though because they must be cleaned and re-oiled every few months. The oil is what helps catch the debris in the filter so it is important to have it properly oiled. Is this what was confusing you?

Yea you definitely helped clear that up.

I'm going to order the filter for sure. I don't mind the maintenance. It actually sounds like fun to set out a day to do it along with other car duties.

I guess now my question would be if the oil filter is worth getting?
I'm not a street racer, just a guy who wants to get into general maintenance.

Also is the oil filter re-usable? I'm going to start trying to do my own oil changes when its time so not sure if I'd have to get new ones every time.

no. oil filters aren't reusable. its better to just replace it w/ a fresh clean one when doing oil changes so yes its worth getting. i have a K&N air filter on my 2010. about 6600+ miles on it. seems like it helped in the MPG department some. doesnt seem that different for the more responsiveness department though (some say they notice a small gain).

PS: while doing your own oil changes, always make sure when you remove the old oil filter that the seal on the filter comes off with the filter. sometimes they tend to stay attached to the engine and its never a good idea to use the seal from the oil filter and the new filter. oil will leak!!

I think a lot of the general consensus around here is that motorcraft (from ford) and K&N are the best oil filters. You won't see any performance gain from a better oil filter, but it will keep particles out of your oil longer and help keep your oil cleaner for a longer period of time. Its really kind of a moot point if you change your oil every 2 or 3000 miles, since they don't generally get fouled up that fast.

My suggestion would be a motorcraft, they're tried and true. I'm using a Bosch d3330 right now, I just want to see what the oil looks like after using different brands.

Hey, we all started somewhere! I never was taught how to do these things, so I ended up asking my friends noob questions until I got it figured out. Besides, how are you gonna learn if you don't do it! Changing the oil really is pretty easy, especially with the focus. The filter is right under the block, and the plug is on the back side of the block. Just make sure the plug is securely back in, the old oil filter ring is out, and that the new filter is on tight! Easy peasy man.
