Start by listing your mods and we will help you figure out what class you would be in. The Focus is a blast to drive and a competitor on the racetrack or autox course. Not to mention affordable to race and maintain.

Best advise I give for autocross is to be smooth will all your inputs, focus on where you are going and do not hit any cones. From there pick up the speed and try and beat your last time. Don't worry about anyone else but your own times and try to beat them. Or, Smooth Fast Clean and Faster Every Run. Ask for help if you are lost or have a question as almost everyone that is racing that day is willing to help, no matter where you are. I would ask to ride with someone to get a better idea of the course as your only preview is to walk the course beforehand. Try to ride in car like your own FWD, don't go for a ride in the 500hp Corvette, that car does not drive like a Focus or run the same line at all. Fun, yes, informative, no.

Have fun, it's a blast and hopefully you like it. There are sticky threads in this forum with links to all rules and what to expect and bring with.

From what you have listed, as long as the throttle body and intake manifold are original and you have a catalytic converter, you would compete in STF where the Focus is very competitive. Seats should be fine as long they weigh more than 25lbs and attach in factory points. Link to all rules for SCCA, most autox clubs go by, are here http://www.scca.com/solo/content.cfm?cid=44517

I'm curious about your tire selection. I want to get started, but don't know where to start for tires. I have similar mods (intake, exhaust, springs), but don't want to spend too much on a set of wheels+tires.

You don't have to buy a helmet to start.

If you are wanting to save a bit of money and just try out it, they should have loaner helmets there for you.

And as a "Novice", your local SCCA group should provide a Rookie/Novice chief who will be guiding all of those new to the sport, like yourself.

I recommend finding that person, getting some pointers, walk the course, ride with a veteran (preferably in a car with your same displacement, Civics mainly) to get a feel of how the course works and have an instructor ride with you your first 2 runs to help you with the cones.
