Tranny Replacement 02' SVT

Hi all,

I just want to start off saying I know little to nothing about cars, save for common sense basics (and I even lack most of them ). I have been trying to get myself into a focus for a long time, and finally found a decent one. However, the owner notes that the car has a second gear grind (which, from tons of browsing, seems to be a commonplace issue...). Is it even remotely possible to find a new tranny for one of these cars any more? The only ones I've found are on Ebay, and cost nearly 1000 bucks for 100K+ miles already on them. The car I found has under 50K miles on it, and has apparently been in storage for years (so it is in good shape). The guy is asking 5K, but if the tranny is already shot, I am slightly hesitant. I do not know if it is synchros or what, as I have not yet driven the car. I am just trying to prepare before I go and make this leap (and, if possible, talk the guy down a little, since I will have to replace the tranny). Does anyone have any suggestions/places I can buy new, or at least not so used trannies?

Hi !
You are right to hesitate on buying the car . I bought my SVT with a tranny that was beginning to show signs of age, but I only paid 1800 $ for. If you plan to buy it anyway , you should bring the price down. In my case , I ended up swapping an mtx tranny in my SVT cause it was impossible to find that tranny in my area (and love of the short gearing of the mtx ) . All in all, it cost me close to 500$ for the swap, but I did all the work myself , and I couldnt use the car for 8 days ( waiting for parts ... ). I wouldn't have left any mechanic do that job on my car though. Finally, a getrag in good condition is worth many hundred bucks ( although 1000$ seems a high for a 100+k miles tranny) so be prepared to spend some money if you buy the car (but in my case , it was wellllll worth it !!)

Thank you both for your replies :D. I was all gun ho to go yesterday, but when I got ahold of the guy selling the car, he told me he had already sold it...it was a really nice SVT too...had turbos and everything :(. 280 horses in that beast. So now my search begins anew....

On another topic, beatmaniac, you mentioned an MTX vs a Getrag tranny. Are MTX trannies easier to find? Forgive my ignorance, but the highest thing I've ever bought for my car is some HID lights and a couple of fuses :(.

barker1964 thank you so much for the offer, but now that the car is gone (which totally sucks) I won't need one for now...hopefully, if I find another one in the future, I can hit you up. I am just waiting for the right SVT to come along...with only 14 thousand ever made, I will be hard pressed to get one in that kind of condition for 5000 again....

Yeah MTx are a lot easier to find ! I got mine for 190 $ and she only has 100 000 km on. Now that you mentioned it was turboed, it would still have been a great deal !
