Steering grinding sound
Hi all.
I bought a new SEL and after about a month of owning it something just didn't sound right when I would turn the wheels of my car. I took it in (after reading so much on this wonderful, and paranoia inducing forum) to my dealer and had a tech take a look at it. He said that there was a TSB for vehicles made right before my car was made about some bearings in the steering being faulty. He ordered new ones cause "these things(TSBs) aren't always correct on exact dates". I had the new ones installed about a week later. Everything sounded fantastic after that! But of course the sound has returned today (a week and a half after said service). I'm going to take it back tomorrow of course but I was wondering if anyone has had this specific issue. I've read extensively here and haven't found anyone describing my exact problem. I would give build date and all but my car is currently in use by my wife Tri-Coat White hatchback for the ones interested |

I had the same issue and my dealer also installed new parts on both sides of the front end. The noise is still there but slightly lower. I have yet to bring it back in to have them look at it. Have you gotten a resolution for your car?

Still no fix yet as it hasn't bothered me so much. I am going in soon for that transmission tsb so I will have them look at it again along with another odd noise coming from the engine bay. Will update my other thread with the video documenting these noises

My mother and I both bought Foci 1 day apart, her's is an SEL, mine is a Ti. Her's had this noise, and they replaced the front springs. Just FYI.

Definitely give your dealer another visit to have the sound re-evaluated. It may or may not be a major concern, but let's be safe than sorry. I can also arrange a call from the Customer Service Manager for your area. In order to do so, please send a PM with your contact information, dealer name/state, approximate mileage, and VIN. Quote:

Sounds as though an appointment has been established; if so, great! The dealer will make sure to address the sound and transmission concern. I'll be happy to contact the Customer Service Manager for your area. Drop me a line via PM with your contact information, dealer name/state, approximate mileage, and VIN. Take care! Noemi

I have a grinding sound in my steering too. Been to the dealer twice and no fix after replacing the whole front drivers side CV and assembly. Now we are waiting on parts for a new steering design supposedly available on 9/15/12. Can anyone confirm if there is a newly designed part for the steering or is my dealer jerking my chain?
Thanks |

I too have a grinding noise. It is noticeable when slowly maneuvering to park. It is a noise is associated with the movement of the steering wheel and the rack, definately not from the wheel hubs. If you rock the steering wheel from side to side you can also hear it when stationary. Spoke with a service advisor when the TSB for the transmission was done, was told that the noise is normal. The guy never even left his desk to listen to the noise it was that normal!
