Bose is pretty much a joke in the audiophile world, there are much better and more affordable options out there.

More affordable yea, but from what I've listened to bose is the best. Maybe there is better out there but I haven't heard it yet.

But I also haven't been to a huge audio store, to try out different systems, just places like best buy, hh gregg, walmart. The large audio stores over price everything regardless of the name or how good it is.

Find a Best Buy with a Magnolia Home Theater they will show you some great systems for the $$$$

I dont deny that Bose sounds good, but not great, good mid range but crappy highs and lows IMO. And also WAYYYY overpriced, for the same money as the Bose cinemate, you can have a true 5.1 system with a decent receiver and speakers.

You have to be careful with Bose, they're tricky with their display setups in-store. They tweak the music/sound that is played through their systems (ever notice Bose systems play their own sounds while everything else is connected to a source on the shelf?). Also in most stores their display is separate from everything else so you can't easily compare with other products. Bose, like Apple, pays stores like Best Buy for specific "real estate" in the store so that their product is in a place by itself.

They are good at getting people to think they are a lot better than they really are.

I will admit I got factory Bose speakers in my mazda. Bose sub in the back, one speaker in each door(not sure on size) and tweeters in the upper coner of the front doors. The sub was blown when we bought the car it still thumps if the music is loud but rattles like a mother at lower volume. Anyways I honestly think my factory focus speakers are better, and I don't even have the svt radio with the sub. I want to upgrade the bose system for something later down the road.

Bose custom installs in automobiles are not half bad. They PA systems are pretty good as well. Like most have said before, off the shelf systems are prettying much not worth the money. Fortunately that's how I got my system, the owners was downsizing and needed the room back and was clearing out his basement for a Bose system. Bose has good stuff but unfortunately it starts above $3000 and is not for home audio.
