Sync sux

I want to go back to the dealer and punch the salesman who told me that if I have sync I don't need a gps. I hardly ever use sync except when I go on a trip out if town. And I wasn't planning to go out of town but we had a death in the family and had to go to Kentucky for the funeral. So here I was in Bowling Green Kentucky in the middle of the night lost and hit the sync connect button to get directions. Instead of an operator I get a recording about how great sync is and demos of somebody else using sync. I don't need a damn demo I need directions what happened to the free three years use we are suppose to get I found an 1-800# on the screen to call for support but they were closed. Damn Sync. So the next morning I log on to syncmyride.com to find out what the problem is and apparently after one year of service I have to re register with them to get the next two years service I didn't get an email or nothing from sync telling me that at the end of the year how was I suppose to know I had to re register the crap. Later after re registering I tried to get directions to the funeral home I still get the same bull s*it recordings. I had to call the 1-800# again to get that strained out this time I was using a different phone number than the number that sync had listed was the excuse I was told. Again I didn't know we have to register each # with syncmyride.com or it won't work all of this you have to do from their web site and not from the car. Damn sync. Now going home trying to tell it to give me directions home( a saved point) it couldn't understand what I was saying I tried saying the address it couldn't understand I had to connect to an operator. Damn sync. Than later trying to get a traffic report through Atlanta Ga. After repeating Atlanta Georgia sevaral times than connecting to an operator I was already stuck in a t
raffic jamb. Damn sync. I am American born and raised I speak plain English but this system can't understand anything I say to it but it works fine when I use it to tune to a radio station or something simple. I hate this sync system and I want to punch out the guy who said I won't need a gps. Damn sync. I am glad l am not paying for this crap.
On the good side the Focus ran great and I got between 34-35mpg the whole trip doing at least 75mph.

This doesn't sound like there is an actual issue with the Sync hardware, your beef appears to be with sync services.

I'm sorry that your dealer didn't bother to tell you that you had to re-register, but it is true that if you wanted to use the sync services that you had to re-register each year for the three year free period. After 3 years its currently $60/ year.

Since you let your first year end without renewing the service they believed that you had canceled your subscription, and shut it down. Inconvienent sure, but if you had been told this it would not have been an issue.

You also have to register the one specific phone you intended to use with sync services since it trys to establish a connection using this specific phone. If you used a phone that was paired to the car but not registered to Sync Services and Sync my ride then it isn't supposed to work. The services is tied to your phone and the fact that you own the car, not to a particular car, so if you drove a rented Focus with Sync you would also be able to pair the phone and call in to the services account and use it without paying, but if you wanted two active phones then you have to pay for services on a seperate device.

It's good to know you speak plain English, because your sentence structure leaves a lot to be desired.

I registered for Sync services after I got my car. I don't use them but it was free so I registered. About 3 weeks before expiration I got an email that they had to be renewed for the upcoming year with a link to do so. It was a 1-click renewal.

Do I have to register if I just use it to sync my phone, or is this registering for other services such as GPS? I guess I could just wait a year and rant if I need to register again.

Well it needs to be registered if you want to submit a vehicle health report or use sync services, it doesn't need to be registered to use the car as a bluetooth audio headset and speaker.

Are the voice commands part of Sync? I don't recall ever registering. I basically just use the USB and use the voice commands to switch songs.

Sync is the hardware module that is in the car and does not cost any more to use for the life of the vehicle. Sync allows you to control media via voice commands and the center stack controls. You can make hands free calls, play with music and what not without ever using sync services.

What the op is bitching about is Sync Services which is a paid service that came standard for 3 years on the 2012 Ford Focus. This feature required that you register your phone in your sync my ride account and to use this phone for sync services.

"Personalized travel, directions, and information
SYNC Services offers audible travel information on demand. If SYNC Services can't fulfill your request for Directions or 411 Business Search, you can use the Operator Assist service.
You can personalize SYNC Services by setting up your Favorite news and destinations at the SYNC Owner site.
When you access SYNC Services, a phone call is placed to an automated system. Once connected, follow the prompts. You don’t need to press the Voice button every time before speaking (there are a few exceptions—see Exploring Information by voice).
How to connect with SYNC services
To connect with SYNC Services, press Voice and say "Services." When prompted, choose one of the following services.

To end the call, Press Phone. If you are requesting directions, the call will end after the directions have downloaded to your vehicle.
Service Description
Traffic Hear a traffic report for your current location or en route to a personal address point like "Home" or "Work"

Directions Get turn-by-turn directions to a destination, including personal address points like “Home” and “Work”

Business Search Find a destination and get directions to it

Horoscopes Hear your daily horoscope

Movies Hear local movie listings

News Hear top news stories

Sports Hear sports scores and game schedules for professional and college teams

Stocks Hear stock reports

Travel Receive airline, rental car, hotel, and taxi assistance from major national booking desks

Weather Hear the weather forecast for your current location

Favorites Connect to the Favorites selected on your owner profile, such as hometown traffic, news, and sports scores

Subscribing to SYNC Services
SYNC Services is complimentary for the first three years with the purchase of many SYNC vehicles. The complimentary subscription includes 60 free Operator Assist sessions.

If your subscription has expired, or if a complimentary subscription is not available for your vehicle, you can log in to your SYNC Owner account to purchase a 1-year subscription for $60.00. This includes 20 free Operator Assist sessions. SYNC with MyFord requires a paid annual subscription.

If you have a complimentary subscription, we will ask you to renew your enrollment annually. You can renew your subscription in vehicle – the system will prompt you when it’s time to renew – or you can renew online by logging in to your SYNC Owner account.

There is no charge to renew your SYNC Services subscription during the three-year complimentary enrollment period. Your renewal lets us know that you plan to continue using the service and provides us with an opportunity to keep our customer service records accurate."

No, you don't need to register for that. Sync Services is just a suite of services from which you can select some or all - things like traffic, directions, weather, sports scores, horoscopes (just in case you are the type of person that also believes in Bigfoot), and so forth. You register your phone because the info is sent through the phone to Sync so it needs an active phone to do this.

Nothing to do with BT steaming, voice control of music, etc. etc.
