My oil smells like gas. :(

Tonight I did my monthly oil check. My Focus has been using half a quart every 3000 miles so I check it once a month.

When I pulled the dip stick I could smell it, gas. I checked the oil and the level is fine, but it smells like gas. I am off to the dealer in the morning. I fear the worst. Any reason that the oil would smell like gas and it not be a major problem?

It is said that direct injection engines are more susceptible to fuel getting past the piston rings and into the oil.

Go to your dealer and get that oil consumption tracked. They won't fix it unless they have a lot of documentation proving a problem. Even then they may ignore it.

I ended up getting rid of my 2013 because the second engine burned a quart of oil in 2000 miles. Ford preformed all tests and even though they showed a problem ford said nothing was wrong.

Direct Injection engines do tend to have a bit more fuel dilution of oil than other types. But given gasoline's volatility, it doesn't take much at all to give off an odor when checking the oil, and a little gas in the oil really isn't harmful. I've had the same concern but a used oil analysis showed no measurable gas was in the sample.

On the consumption side, while we'd all like our engines to use no oil, a quart every 6,000 miles is well-within spec and certainly in the reasonable range.

FYI ford spec, in Canada at least, is one litre in 4800 km. That is about a quart in 3000 miles.

They changed their standards in MY 2011

Thanks! That makes me feel a bit better. Still to be safe I'm getting it looked at. The smell is new and I have have almost 25,000 miles. Also I need to have the DCT looked at, it finally started acting up. I was hoping I wasn't going to see that issue....

Here's an update.

After driving it to work (24 miles 45 minutes) the gas smell disappeared. So I assume it was PCV related and the long drive allowed it time to clear out the gas vapors.

The dealer looked at the DCT and agreed it was acting strangely, so they did a software update from the latest TSB (I'm not sure what the number is and it isn't on my paper work.) and did the reset and relearn procedure. It now drives like a completely different car. No slipping, no grinding. Very positive on up shifts and hard to fool at low speeds and cause it to buck. Bonus my MPG went up by 1.5 miles a gallon. It's been two weeks and I love the way it drives now. I guess I will wait and see if it degrades over time.

Gas smell probably isn't exactly PCV-related. DI engines tend to push gas past the rings into the sump. Driving as you did heats the oil enough to evaporate it. Normally this isn't an issue, but lots of short trips, especially in cold weather...
