The Right Tires and Rims For Me

I have read through some of the threads on here and here has been some good information. I ask for more help, however. I bought my Focus at an auction a couple of years ago and aftermarket rims were already on there. The purpose of my car would be simply driving. Nothing fancy, not going up the mountains, not racing, and I live in the Arizona desert so there's no snow and rains only a few times a year though the heat is a bit high.
Though I would not have bought after market rims I figured with them there I would leave them. Sadly within that first month my tires all had to be replaced and since then I have had to pay $130+ for each tire roughly every six months. This is not what I expected from my reliable little commuter car. Sadly with the rims it has there are limited tires and they are all expensive and won't last.
I am in a position now where I can purchase both new tires and rims. As in the thread for advice in choosing new tires I saw information to give.
My driving habits are pretty non-aggressive. I haven't had a speeding ticket in years and that was when I was 20. The climate I live in was already described but it is hot and dry. The terrain is street and pretty nice. I'm. Of looking for racing or high performance I just want to save some money on gas when I drive to work and around town.
What kind of advice can you all give? What size should I seek? Tirerack seems to be the place to go but are there other suggestions? Thank you.

Your problem is probably due to improper alignment. The Focus has had alignment issues since its inception. Ford allowed an alignment specification range that was simply too broad and there were combinations of allowable settings that will simply eat tires. The downside is that most alignment techs aren't aware of this or are simply too lazy to do a more precise alignment.

On a 2001 you want 0.01 to 0.02 inches of toe-out (but no more than that) if you have stock rubber bushings. In the rear you want 0.04 inches of rear toe-in. Front camber just needs to be within the allowable range (camber is tolerated up front). In the rear you do not want more than -1.5 degrees. This is non-adjustable from the factory and too many cars were delivered with more than this amount. You will need to get an aftermarket camber adjustment devise, such as camber bolts, to allow the proper settings to be made. If you don't ask for these specs/settings you will not get them!!
