Question Zetec 1.6 or 1.8: how to tell?

I own a '96 1.8 Zetec Escort (115 hp) and a friend has a 1.8 Zetec Focus (also 115 hp). I drove his car but found it sluggish to the point I think he maybe in fact has a 1.6 (100 hp).

how can you tell? I've searched the web and this forum but haven't found the answer.

any engine bay or serial number clues to the engine capacity?

thanks for the help

on a 1.6 the engine is reversed: at the front of the engine bay is the air intake side of things, and you can easily tell this by looking where the intake pipe goes from the filter box, if it goes down to the front its a 1.6 but if it goes to the middle of the engine bay on the rear of the block its probably a 1.8

How can you detect 15% power difference between two different cars?
