lol you second Gen people know nothing....

s was never an option. the "S" model for that year range was an LX.

and being an lx, just check the vin number if they will provide one for you to figure out the engine. zetec dohc is 3, sohc is P and anything else is the 2.3


if it is a sohc spi... just be aware they are very prone to early engine failure. mine did it, others havent.

That and the spi is dog slow and without a lot of good aftermarket parts.

ok so I picked up this car today, it is an SE. It has a 2.0 split port engine. And mike, you have a good eye, I missed that dint in the picture and was a little shocked when I went up there, but was able to talk down the price a bit more, all in all I think I did ok, it was a little sketchy and I almost backed out of it, but its still a nice car and was a nice drive home.

which number on the vin tells you about the motor?

I'm questioning if it's actually an 03... my reason being is because it has chrome headlights. In 03 they started using the gray housings. Anyone could have changed the headlights, the vin would say for sure though.

I believe vin 8th digit is for the engine.
