Huh. Seems kind of unnecesary, I thought there might be something more to it then that based on stuff above. If you're even a little off true TDC the piston will move anyway (which you can see on the gauge), and you still know that you were on the compression stroke, if the dial doesn't move at all just go to the companion cylinder.
