I don't understand how the valvecover can influence a leakdown test, can somebody explain that?

Valve cover removed is just so you can see if valves are closed.

Huh. Seems kind of unnecesary, I thought there might be something more to it then that based on stuff above. If you're even a little off true TDC the piston will move anyway (which you can see on the gauge), and you still know that you were on the compression stroke, if the dial doesn't move at all just go to the companion cylinder.

It cant influence it but with the VC off you can make sure the valves on that Cyl are closed and if there is a lot of blow by the air escaping from around the rings into the bottom of the engine will easly come up through the oil drains in the head to where the VC covers
