Catch Can, Any particular type preferred?

So I have been planing all along on getting an oil/air separator and use C-F-M's PCV adapter and run their oil/air separator. I have read on the builds about a catch can and was thinking that there was something else that was needed... the "catch can" is just another word for a oil/air separator. Is the one that C-F-M a "good" can? or is there better brands, either larger catch area, better at removing oil vapors, etc.

Then my guess is these work best when you still pull a vac on them so you will want to still route it to the intake before the turbo, or are you able to just put a small breather on it like on the valve cover and call it good? speaking of which do you still just vent the valve cover through a breather? or do you pull that through a catch can now also?

Was going to eventually... building it all up to run boost and all, but don't have the $$ for the turbo stuff at the moment and need to get it go and going first. The plan is to have everything done (got the oil pan bung for the return line, even going to get Toms FI/Turbo tune). So its as much of a "bolt" on as possible with a DIY kit.

Edit: I have not picked out a turbo yet but was looking at a quick spooling one with a WHP of around 300 to 350... if that matters at all...

I wouldnt run a Vac to the catch can , If your stuck on venting to a catch can then just put a filter on it

Not one way or the other... with use of a good catch can it should not matter right because it will be "clean" air. My guess is I would because there is no real disadvantage with a good system...

So Tom, no brand of choice?

No it won't be "clean" air. Only the heaviest parts will stay in the catch an, but that air is still very hot and will likely contain a bit of oil and will certainly contribute to knock.
I dump mine.

Depends on the catch can right? given enough surface area it can cool the air sufficiently and after all its going through a turbo and an inter cooler so even if it's still hotter than the engine bay what minor temp increase it provides to the incoming air would be mute right?

And as far as only catching the heaviest parts... again depends on the catch can.... it looks like there are a few companies out there have have some complex mechanical channels the oil has to go through to minimize it as much as possible.

You say Dump... when ever I think of a "catch can" i think of an empty old tin/aluminum baked beans can with wire holding it up with a tube routed into it. So when you say dump your using a catch can and then just routing the air down... how does that work for tacks (if they ever inspect?)

I run 2x 5/8" heater hoses, one from the valve cover and one from a gutted PCV valve, down under the engine and they dump behind the cross member. No can.
I don't think it violates any track rules.

Isn't there something about no "intentional" dripping of fluids? In my searching there are pictures of people having many fluid oz after a few thousand miles. granted a track day your not going as far but you are pushing the vehicle more and could still dump an oz or two of junk o. The track....

I used a catch can before dumping, and the vast majority of that fluid is just water. I've run dumped for a few years now and it doesn't drip anything.
If you're getting oil in the mix to the point it drips, then you probably have blow-by due to mechanical failure.
