I have an odd question for the 5-speed guys. Is your car a little hard to be smooth with? Especially taking off from a stop or shifting up into 2nd or 3rd?

I obv know how to drive stick, have been for years. I just feel like every now and then I have a less than perfect (not bad, just not smooth) experience with the car.

I bought it used 34k on it and have been driving it for 3 weeks now. Maybe I'm not used to it yet, but I know the different brands of cars that I drive at work are more easy to "pick up" than the focus was.

Not really. This is a pretty easy car with a featherweight clutch. The engagement point is kind of funky though, at the top of the pedal travel.

I think that's why it can be tricky for me, I am used to BMW and Honda manuals. I actually thought this car was easy to drive when I test drove it.

It was a little difficult for me when I was test driving mine. The vehicle I had prior to my focus was a 93 Audi 80 over in Germany. But I've been driving it for about ~8 months now and it's smooth as butter, even when I'm powering through the gears.

The clutch is slightly light, but there was still a lot of feel. If you want to talk about a feather weight clutch you'd have to talk about the over assisted Fiesta clutch, or the marshmallow of a clutch in the terrible Aveo.

The clutch in the focus felt much like the one in the old Prizm that I was driving for 3 years prior to getting my Focus. It felt good because it was mostly familiar.

I know I just have to get used to it, have been a lot better at it and getting better every day. Let my friend drive it that just barely knows how to drive stick and he said it felt pretty easy lol

I'd never so much as ride in an Aveo (nor was I aware they even made a MT one!). I've only driven the AT Fiesta, unfortunately, as when I was looking I didn't see any manual ones on the various lots. My fiancee's mother has an AT Prizm. I...loathe that car deeply. I'd donate it to a monster truck show if I could.

It was at the GM proving grounds so it was not out on the road publicly, but it was even more terrible than you could imagine.

The manual fiesta also had an almost feather weight clutch, but you could still feel it bite and engage it properly even though the gearbox had long throws. It was more fun to chuck around a tight steering and handling loop even at speeds below 40 than the DCT in the Fiesta, but the DCT did return almost double the fuel economy when driven spiritedly in those conditions.

On the other hand the manual gearbox in the Focus drove pretty much exactly like the one in the 94 Prizm 1.6L and C5x 5 speed, at least from the clutch stand point, the gear shift is in slightly different places so the throws were a little bit different.

I actually preferred the 6MT in the ST once you figured out where the gates were, but that wasn't available on the N/A models or at all when I ordered my car. Except the clutch in the ST was more of a light switch, firm, but without much feel for the exact engagement point in the brief flings around the test track.

I'll concur that the Prizm might not have been something to look at necessarily, but it was a very inexpensive and very reliable car for the most part while I had it, so for that I can't complain too much. It served its purpose. The automatic ones are bad, because even the current corolla is still a 4 speed and they clung onto the 3 speed for as long as possible.

Being forced to ride in the new aveo on a business trip on monday was not fun (the new Sonic is still an Aveo elsewhere), that one blew out the serpentine belt and broke loose the a/c compressor some 50 miles or less after leaving the airport. Its replacement was actually a 2013 Corolla with under 1500 miles on the clock which also had some minor issues of its own.... Lol.

I'm not real smooth with it in part due to the more agressive clutch in my Subi which I prefer and am much smoother with that one but I'm getting better with the focus the more I drive it. My wife shifts it better than I do.

Well at least I'm not alone haha. I am installing a new rmm from central florida motorsports this weekend and feel like that could make some sort of diff with the overall feel and control of the drive train, as I do notice the more than average engine movement. Will update with results.
