Post Why I traded my Mk3 in

CAUTION: Long read with a lot of details.

Many of you know that I had a heavily modified Mk3 that I bought brand new in September of last year.

My build thread with pics for reference.

In 16-ish months I put over 30,000 miles on her. Since around Thanksgiving I had been considering getting a larger vehicle for a number of reasons. In order for that to happen, a lot of things needed to happen.

1. My wife be OK with it.
2. I get a decent value on trade-in or private party sell.
3. My monthly payment not increase.
4. I get exactly what I want.

I worked on number one for the majority of the time from then until about three-four weeks ago. After one was accomplished I took it to the dealership. I have a very, very good relationship with my dealership, salesman, and the manager. I've used the same salesman for nine years.

*My dad is a Ford employee in another state*

I talked to them about what I wanted to accomplish. They initially valued my car, as it was (modified), at $17000.

For reference:
- 2013 Performance Blue Ti hatch
- (modifications can be seen in my profile page)
- 28,300 mi (at the time)
- VERY clean

I determined that two different Fusions would fit my bill and found out A-plan pricing on them. I left the dealership with a trade-in value of $17500 on paper.

My wife and I bought a new house and we needed to wait to close on it before we could do anything with a vehicle. We closed and a week and a half later I went back to the dealership. I spoke with Bodie (salesman) and told him "I need more money in trade-in." They re-evaluated my car and came back at $18,000, this time with 30,3xx miles on the clock.

Well, rebates had increased since my last venture at the dealership, so I had that going for me, but I wanted more money. I told them, give me moar monies!! They said, $18,250. I said, "DEAL!"

The Fusion I wanted was on the lot. 2014 Titanium with navigation and 19" H-Spoke wheels. They took it to tint and to be detailed. Bodie told me I had until 5pm to strip the car of mods as long as it appeared the same. (I told you I had a great relationship)

I took off or swapped (major-ish parts):
- RSB
- Intake
- Hood struts
- Bulbs
- Roof-rack
- window visors
- oil cap

I returned, dropped off Megan, and picked up Moira.

Here are the reasons that eventually amounted in my dissatisfaction with Megan.

1. I could not stand the ride. AT ALL. Yes, it was "slammed" on V-Maxx coilovers. I was pleased in the beginning with the looks and even the ride. But that ride got progressively worse as the miles climbed.

My wife:
- I hate this car.
- I hate how this thing rides.
- I HATE THIS CAR.

Could I have swapped suspension? Yes, absolutely. Unfortunately, with moving, all of my tools and the OEM suspension were on the bottom of a ton of boxes, stashed away. I began to dread just how hard every little bump and crack felt. I regret the V-Maxx coilovers. You can see a thorough review about them HERE.

V-Maxx has been claiming a fix or re-design since we made the first complaints, neither have materialized. V-Maxx also hasn't said anything about swapping the ill-fitting suspension for a new one at no cost for those of us that bought what they claimed, "fits the Mk3 Focus." In fact, they've refused to answer the question.

2. The Focus became too small. A couple of things have changed since I first purchased it. Those changes amounted in a car that I could no longer do what I wanted with it; namely, transport passengers and/or cargo in a comfortable manner.

3. I began to have issues with the evap-system. The fuel gauge was no longer working properly (I actually ran out of gas once) and it would often die at intersections because the idle fluctuated so much. Ford determined it to be the evap-valve was malfunctioning. They are changing/fixing those things for the new owner. Because my warranty was going to be up in 6,000 miles and that fix alone was over $500 I was concerned about any more potential problems.

Ultimately, these three things were the largest factors in wanting to get a Fusion, though there were certainly other smaller factors too. What it boils down to is that I was able to get a new Fusion for less money a month than the Focus cost, get a great trade-in value, and eliminate the biggest three issues I had. And my wife was okay with it.

The dealership got a very nice, modified car for re-sale, and I got a car that fits my needs better and has turbo! Win-win all around.

If there is anything else I can think of, I'll add it to this thread.

I thought of something else.

There were some minor things that began to absolutely grind on me:

1. The location of the dome light. I work out of my car and with there being less daylight I need that dome. Every time I saw the shadow of my head while I wrote, a part of me died.

2. My fog-lights would not stay on when the car was turned off and then on again. (This literally happens nearly 50-100 times on the days that I work)

3. Both of my sons kicking the back of my seat. (Every. Day.)

4. Unable to access my glove box with a passenger in the seat. (Too often)

5. Small cargo area.

These were the smaller things that added to the dissatisfaction from the larger things. Sometimes when you focus on the negative, it becomes hard to see the positive. It was becoming hard for me to see the positive.

Oh yeah, I know. I had 18x8.5" before. The Fusion is 19x8. There is more body roll, but I'll take it any day over how harsh the ride had been. The first couple of days I was shocked to find myself bracing for bumps and cracks in the road. I didn't realize that I had begun doing that.

I see that Steeda sells a front tower brace and a RSB, reasonably priced too.

I really liked your car. Hate to see it go.

My wife and I are considering dropping our Focus as well. For many of the same reasons. Considering an Explorer as a replacement though...Go big or go home right?
