With the Focus only the HB was the one for us since my wife and I wanted a car that she enjoyed driving and got decent MPGs but I needed something that retained some sort of sportiness, agressive styling and had to be fun to drive along with a mandatory 5 speed and the Focus SE really surprisingly fit the bill.
We did drive a couple of Mazda3 HBs and my mom has an '07 3 and they were solid performers also and I really like the styling but it came down to price and options and ease of financing and we ended up in the Focus. The color was one of the tipping factors and I get comments on the color alone then I get the usual "That's a Focus?!"...."Why,yes it is" I proudly reply.

I'm not so sure of the smiley faced Mazdas and prefer the "scowl" of the Focus and it does stand out on it's own in a sea of swoopy bodied compacts.

Screw those d*cks at whatever rag that was that placed the Focus in 5th and the Mazda3 in first based primarily on the fact that the Focus they were provided with did not happen to have cruise control.
You wouldn't happen to be referring to motor trend's 40 mpg comparison by any chance?

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...n/viewall.html

They were the jokers who ranked the Focus (5/6) worse than all but the Elantra despite the fact that it was the most consistant no matter who drove it in terms of fuel efficiency, even without the cruise control. But the very similar Mazda 3 SkyActiv with its slightly different bore and stroke was ranked #1. They went on to praise the Direct injection and 12:1 compression in the Mazda but made no mention of this in the Ford, despite the Focus having this technology before the Mazda 3.

I'd stick with the focus. I have personal experience with women thinking they like the mazda's firm ride, but then ending up selling the car a year later because the "ride quality is horrible".

One of the things I really like about the Focus is the lack of brake dust. My prior car, a MINI Cooper Clubman was terrible with that. You washed it, drove it down the street, came back, and there was brake dust on the wheels. And it stuck to the rims. The 18 inch rims on my Titanium are great since they have widely spaced spokes which allow you get the wash rag all the way in to clean the insides of the rims....but its not such big problem since the Focus puts off very little dust.

This the most.

The regular Titanium rims are a pain to clean to say the least; the 5 spoke 18s seem like a dream in that regard.

The 17" painted and machined and the silver ones like them are also fairly easy to clean.

I am going to change pads on it ASAP. To save the wheels and money on cleaning supplies.

Oh, the transmission is occasionally jerky in town with the constant converter locking and unlocking. Pretty harsh sometimes. We drove another one to make sure, and it did the same thing. Mostly does it on downshifts.
