Manual Transmission w/ Push Button Start

My car will not let me shut off the engine while moving. Pushing the button does nothing. Can others shut off their cars while moving?

Not that I would ever be negligent enough to have this problem, but what if all the coolant or engine oil leaks out of my car while i'm doing 80 on the highway. I need to be able to shut off the engine before I come to a complete stop. Now as it is I have to slam on the breaks to stop so that I can get the engine shut off as fast as possible.

There should be an override that will allow you to shut down the engine if you push & hold the button for a specified number of seconds. Check the manual.

Even in the unlikely event of some sort of catastrophic engine failure, I think your okay to wait until you come to a complete stop before killing the engine, lol. You really want to lock up the steering doing 80 down the highway?

ahh, shoot. Now I'm that guy who didn't read the manual. Although i did, i must have missed out somehow.

Steering wheel doesn't lock up at all at 80. Works pretty well actually, now at 5mph it is a bit hard to turn.

No? How does the steering not lock when you kill the engine? What prompts the steering to lock?

Surely you lose steering assist, at a minimum? I still can't think of a single compelling reason to need to kill the engine while moving, but maybe that's just me.

What are the odds someone would need to do this? I've never heard of such a situation.

Happened to my wife 2 years ago in her PT cruiser. Shop didn't tighten the oil nut all the way, all the oil let out. She was on the expressway when it happened.

1 year ago in my honda accord: radiator developed a small pin hole leak. After a few thousand miles my car was out of coolant.

You don't notice till you see smoke, or notice the temperature needle pegged at "hot". The first instinct (which is the correct one) is "holy snikies, my engine is going to be ruined" so what do you do? You turn it off immediately without doing anything else. After the engine is off then you can worry about safely exiting traffic.

Quoting the manual: (and a little sorry i started this thread, although always happy to help others)

"Note: In order to switch off the engine while the vehicle is in
motion, press and hold the START/STOP button for at least one second,
or press the START/STOP button three times within two seconds. Then,
shift to neutral and use the brakes to bring the vehicle to a safe stop.
After the vehicle has stopped, turn the engine off and shift into park.

WARNING: Switching off the engine when the vehicle is still
moving will result in a loss of brake and steering assistance. The
steering will not be locked, but higher effort will be required. When the
ignition is switched off some electrical circuits, warning lights and
indicators may also be off."
