Playing music from USB

Didn't know if anyone can help me, I've been having problems playing music on my sync thru an ipod so I decided to use a USB thumbstick I have laying around instead. I've converted my songs in itunes to mp3 format and dragged them over to the USB drive, but when I try to play them in the car it says "bad media"...any help would be appreciated!

is your flashdrive formatted as fat32? Is there any other files on the drive that are not mp3?

Odds are it is FAT32 already, but whatever. Going to assume you have Windows.

Put in the drive, go to My Computer (Computer), right-click on the USB drive, select Format..., set FileSystem to be FAT32. You can leave the other things as defaults, click start.

Of course it'd probably be better to actually check if it's FAT32 already. Right-Click on drive->Properties, see what File system says.

Note that formatting the drive will delete everything on it so make sure you have copies of stuff you want.

I figured out how to reformat it a bit ago, put music back on the drive and tried it...Still saying "no media", etc. Starting to get frustrated with it.

What settings did you use for converting to MP3?

Did you purchase the music through iTunes? I seem to recall them having some copyright protection for a while. I believe the latest version corrects that, though.

I used iTunes to convert them and I purchased them through iTunes also...That's kind of crappy seeing as how I've paid for this music...I should be able to use it how I want.

You paid for a license to listen to the music on authorized devices, technically, but let's not get into that it just makes everyone angry.

When did you buy the songs? Also, like I asked, what settings did you use when you converted the songs? "iTunes" isn't super helpful. Can you post a screenshot of a summary screen (e.g. http://i.imgur.com/kn9NU.png). If it shows your name/account, you can block that out since it's not useful for troubleshooting.

"Bad media" or "no media"? Which one? I have never seen "bad media" but have seen "corrupt media". Not trying to split hairs but details help us help you (when we can). I have used purchased-through-iTunes music on both an iPod (120gb classic) and a USB drive. Out of curiousity, what was the iPod problem(s) that made you want to go USB drive? I've had an easier time with my iPod with music than a USB drive personally (but have gotten both to work pretty well).
