Crazy A/C problem

It's a 2003 w/2.0 SPI, 80k. I've had it since last fall. The A/C didn't turn on at first, but then it did a few days later, but we didn't try using it again untill a couple months ago. It wouldn't turn on (no green lcd, clutch doesn't engage, fans on radiator dont come on) again. Blower fan works at all speeds, max A/C and green lcd work (blows uncooled air). Then a week later it turns on (green lcd also) and cools at all fan speeds for a week or so but wont turn off unless the fan is turned off. This cycle repeats. Currantly it wont turn on, and it's hot as hell outside. I noticed that the compressor had a nice coat of oil and dirt so I figured there was a leak. The S. belt needed to be replaced so I got one and an A/C kit.
Before I did anything I removed the stereo and panel to look at the switch and controls. Everything looked fine, put back together, and all of a sudden everything works, on/off etc. except it doesnt cool very well and the clutch is going on and off a lot. Sooooooo...I break out the kit and mannage to get most of 1 can in.....cools even less. Now it wont turn on again.
What would you do next? By the way, the check engine OBD symbol shows now on the dash, and I havn't found my code reader yet.

Solved completely? Because it sounds to me like you put too much refrigerant in the AC, and I bet it is only cooling mediocrely now.
