Hi all,
I put my Focus 1.6 2001 Ghia in for an MOT this week and it has failed terribly on its emissions. The garage, owned by my friend have been working on trying to find the source of the problem all day today and most of yesterday. They have checked and replaced a few bits and pieces. The computer brought up a code of P0172 at first and now it is saying P1132. They have checked and cleaned the EVAP connections and replaced the EVAP (purge valve). There are no leaks whastoever and it has been thorougly checked for any air leaks. When the car is idle, if you bring it up to 2100 rpm, it all of a sudden goes all weird and blowing smoke out of the exhaust. They also detected a 'popping' or 'thumping' noise from the engine bay this morning, however this has eased slightly but it still playing up at 2100 rpm. They have also cleaned the block connection below the EVAP, the coil pack was removed and repaced with another. The MAP sensor has been removed and cleaned, it has new spark plugs and they have changed the injectors 3 and 4 as the spark plugs removed from 3 and 4 were black. It has had an oil change, new fuel filter, fuel additive and an engine flush but the problem persists. The throttle butterfly has been cleaned and a new throttle postion sensor has been put in. Any help would be massively appreciated. ![]() Thank you for reading :-) |

Keep going, they haven't found it...............if a huge vacuum leak on one of the other cylinders not flooding then PCM will flood ALL cylinders including the good running ones trying to richen the leaking one up. Meaning, many times rich can actually be lean. Food for thought.
The popping or thumping is probably misfiring plugs from fouling, backfiring into exhaust pipe. |

Hiya, thanks for your reply. No go still. No fault codes coming up, still doing the same thing and map sensor has just been replaced. :-((

Somebody needs to look at the O2 sensor output in a realtime data check. Your previous codes mentioned it but you don't detail if O2 sensor or wiring checked.

P0172 - System to Rich (Bank 1) The Adaptive Fuel Strategy continuously monitors the fuel delivery hardware. The test fails when the adaptive fuel tables reach a lean calibrated limit. See Possible Causes for DTC P0171 See Diagnostic Aides for DTC P0171
P1132 - Lack of HO2S-11 Switch, Sensor Indicates Rich A HEGO sensor indicating rich at the end of a test is trying to correct for an over-lean condition. The test fails when the fuel control system no longer detects switching for a calibrated amount of time. See Possible Causes for DTC P1130 On older cars like this, you should check the intake manifold for leaks. I'd even consider replacing the gasket. On US cars, the PCV valve is typically the cause of our problems, but it could be other things as well. Both codes indicate a rich issue, so your problem could be too much fuel like from a stuck injector. You'd notice that by comparing spark plug deposits. Unfortunately most people use platinum plugs which don't retain deposits like standard plugs do.
