Why is the 2012 Focus advertised with 59mpg?

From reading around on this site and checking official fuel economy ratings it gets around 40mpg depending on how you drive it. So why is Ford advertising it as 59mpg?

I've seen 39, not 59. I've seen 109mpge (equivalent) for the Electric Focus.

That's odd. I figured they might be using Imperial Gallons in Canada, but 39 US mpg is only 46 Imp mpg, still nowhere near 59.

Only other thing I can think is that they must use some different testing protocol (lower speeds). I just looked up a Focus SE very similar to mine at a dealer in Montreal and it shows a highway rating of 51mpg.

Transport Canada uses a less rigorous testing methodology than they use in the States. Plus we use imperial gallons, although I suppose that's unofficial since fuel has been sold in litres for 30 years. Simpler to stick with L/100 km

Yep Im in Canada and have seen that too in the brochure.

Its called the SFE package (Super Fuel Economy) available on the SE 6-speed automatic.

Its just really exaggerating seriously think about it LOL.

If a Focus can get 59 US MPG (yeah I know about different gallons), what can a Toyota Yaris get, 100 or something LOL. The Focus is not a little smart car with no options, its a pretty fair sized car.

Since the manufacturers can advertise EPA economy estimates that they know are bunk, why not?

Remember that lawyer that sued Honda because her hybrid got nowhere near the advertised claims, she lost.
