From page 164 on version 5 of the owners manual:

"Unlocking the doors/two-stage unlock
1. Press and release to unlock the driver’s door.
Note: The interior lamps and turn signal lamps will illuminate.
2. Press and release again within three seconds to unlock all the
doors. The turn signals will flash.
The remote entry system activates the illuminated entry feature; this
feature turns on the lamps for 25 seconds or until the ignition is turned
on.

Two-stage unlocking may be disabled or enabled by simultaneously
pressing the and controls on the transmitter for four seconds
(disabling two stage unlock allows all vehicle doors to unlock
simultaneously). The turn signal lamps will illuminate twice to indicate
that two-stage unlock was enabled or disabled.
The unlocking mode will
be applied to remote entry, keyless entry and intelligent access (if
equipped).
Two-stage unlocking may also be disabled or enabled through the
message center if this is an available message center option or by your
authorized dealer. Refer to Message center in the Instrument Cluster
chapter.
If equipped with an IA key, when two-stage unlocking is disabled,
intelligent access at the driver’s door results in an unlock of all doors
(not just the driver door)."

My dome lights will not come on with 1 or 2 presses of the remote. Had the car to the dealer for the grill shutter harness recall, I told the service manager about the dome light. He took the keys to all the Focus on the lot and found one that did not light as well. He will look into it and have an answer for me the next time I come in.

Good luck and please let us know what you find out. I told the service person about the same thing, he just looked at me like I was crazy and said "That makes no sense" He said I could leave it there ... but I don't live very close so just for that it wasn't worth it. I did find out through experimenting that if I push unlock, then lock, then unlock again on the key, the dome light will come on. I do a lot of night driving so the dome light comes in handy, when it works. Don't want to sound like a whiner, aside from the dome light I love the car and have had no other problems with it.

While we're discussing bizarre, haunted electrical behaviours while using the remote... my mirror signals don't flash when unlocking, the first time... they do the 2nd time or when locking. Honestly, I'm lost for words...

Dome lights not turning on

I have tried every combination of suggestions on this page and my dome lights still do not consistently turn on when I unlock the doors with the remote or open the door. Sometimes it works, other times, only the ambient lighting goes on.

Just out of curiosity, a question for those experiencing the same problem, did you at some point disconnect the main battery terminal?

I disconnected the terminal to reset the date. It was one day ahead and I read that I needed to disconnect the terminal to fix the date. This worked in fixing the date but I wonder if it somehow messed up the lighting?

We're definitely talking about trying this only in low light correct? Because the 5th printing of the 2012 Focus manual doesn't specifically mention it but I think that due to a light sensor, the dome lights only come on in low light. The ambient lights are the same and along with the dome lights will not come on if the dome light "off" switch is activated. If that's the case, if only checking them after dark and they're still intermittent, I think your FoFo needs some dealer attention. I did "reset" my car unintentionally as I had an incident where the whole car was dead and I put pressure on the + battery cabling and power came back. It didn't affect my interior lighting though.

Thanks for the reply. I tried it last night in an empty parking lot that was pitch dark and the lights did not turn on when the door was opened (only the ambient lights went on). I have also tried this in daylight with the lights turning on so I don't think it's a sensor issue. Also, I have tried this with the auto headlights on (control knob turned to the full clockwise position) and with the headlights completely off (control knob turned to the full counter-clockwise position)

I agree that it might be time to visit the dealer with the FoFo :-). My fear is that this is intermittent, which is the "kiss of death" when bringing a car to a dealer for repair. What I mean by this is that unless the problem can be duplicated in front of a service representative, it is highly unlikely that they will find anything wrong and simply state "working properly".

I just went and checked my car out again.

when the Off button is blue the dome lights work with the doors. When the button is amber, the dome lights do not turn on.

Now I also believe that sometime the dome light wouldn't turn on until I hit the unlock button the second time. Everytime I checked tonight the light came on the first time. However I did set the door locks to unlock all doors at the same time. So I don't know if that changed or affected anything.
