Starter Relay

I have a 2002 Focus ZTS with ZETEC engine that now only clicks when I try to start the engine. Battery seems to be fine (all interior and exterior lights work). I would like to change the Starter Relay before submitting to a Dealer checkup. Problem is identifying which relay is the correct one!! Handbook is confusing. Any suggestions??

Relay 17 in the passenger compartment fuse panel.
Clicking relays are usually a sign of a dieing battery; your "lighting works" test isn't really valid since the starter motor will easily put the most electrical load on the battery.

I would attend to agree.. Battery was recently replaced (not always an indicator that all is now well), but no previous indicators of a battery problem. Car worked fine one minute next it only clicked. I was hoping to replace the Starter Relay before spending a service fee at the Dealer. Better $20. than $75.

Bad connection due to battery replacement?

if its a good solid click then most likely its battery...

I had a case 3 years ago where I was chasing something down and tried jumper cables and over night charges but the battery would hold a voltage but not a charge. So i figured it was the starter... after a starter replacement cable replacement finally swapped batteries and started right up. it was the battery the whole time...

Mother in law just got a new battery from a big box store and had a dead cell and after having a store clerk test a few others in stock all with that lot number had a dead cell...

Under those circumstances then, I would hope the battery terminals were cleaned and secured properly on the battery posts when the battery was replaced.
Might I ask why the battery was replaced? If it wasn't simply age, you may be treating a symptom (another dead battery) and not the cause (faulty charging system, for example.)
Relays don't fail that often - though it's not unheard of - they usually just click because they're not getting enough juice.
A voltage reading on the battery with a borrowed multimeter might save you that $75 dealer diagnostic fee.
At the very least, check the battery terminals for tightness. Might be as simple as a loose connection.

Ok, I'm stupid!!!! Just tried jumping the car and of course it started just fine!! Bad assumption because of the lights, radio etc.. working... Thanks for forcing me to try the battery.
