2.0 ZTEC versus 2.0 Duratec

If this topic has been debated before, then please just disregard this tread.

I own my grandpa's 2000 Ford Focus Wagon, it has the 2.0 ZTEC engine and feels pretty stout for a Wagon with an Automatic.

My wife has a 2008 Focus with the 2.0 Duratec and 5 speed manual.

My wife's car seems to have substantially more power then my wagon. My wagon has 46K on it, her's is right around 90K.

Clearly the 5 speed would make the 08' "feel" quicker, but does the 2.0 D put out that much more power than my 2.0 Z?

What is the power difference exactly?

Both engines seem to like to rev and quite honestly, when I stretch the 08's legs into the upper R's it really seems to pull strong. But so does the ZTEC.

I'd expect the Duratec being newer to put out more power, but I wonder what each would do in a 1/4 mile drag race? I've never run them side by side and run them all the way out before.

I know I wish the ZTEC had the timing chain the Duratec has! That's for sure! Plus the oil filter on the Duratec is A LOT easier to change! LOL!

Thanks,
Greg

Moved to "Ford Focus & General Car Chat". Your thread didn't seem to cover anything specific about performance parts so I just closed the one you had in the Zetec section and moved the one from the Duratec section to here.

Zetec: 130 HP @ 5,300 rpm; 135 ft lb , 183 Nm @ 4,500 rpm
2008+ Duratec: 140 hp (100 kW) at 6000 rpm with 136 lb·ft (184 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm

The zetec will run out of steam at higher RPMs. add in the gearing advantage the 5 speed has over the 4 speed auto and less drivetrain loss and you have the reason the newer car is quicker

This link lists the main differences between the two motors well:
http://duratec.wikispaces.com/

Also, the wagon probably weighs around 150lbs more, so that will play into its performance too.

Zetec 128 hp (97 kW) and 135 lb·ft (183 Nm)

Duratec 136 hp (101 kW) and 136 lb·ft (184 N·m)

Transmissions are the same for the first gens as well.

As for 1/4 times on a completley stock power plant it would be pretty close with the duratec coming out on top.

Sounds good, thanks Guys, that's the kind of info I was looking for and expecting.....makes sense with those figures, coupled with the 5 speed why the 08 seems quicker......

but in a "heads-up" race, I think I could take my wife in the 08, if I shifted the 00 Wagon manually and wrung it out for all she's worth......because my wife has NO clue how to race......HAHAHAHA......

I know this is dumb.........in the end, but fun to talk about anyway.

Thanks again,
Greg

absolutely! no doubt about it!

This is a great website with very helpful members. It's one think I like about my Focus.

I also like owning a car that is from the very first year of production of these great little cars.

What a HUGE LEAP forward from the Escort days!!!

You have to remember that 2008-2011 Foci sold in CA emissions states (PA being one of them)were sold with the PZEV(Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle)variant of the Duratec engine. As such,H.P. and torque ratings are a little lower than the regular engine.

That's true! Her car is pzev....I'm not fond of that aspect either! I absolutely hate the non serviceable air filer! What the f was Ford thinking with that BS? I'm going to try to find a nonpzev 08 i can get the housing out of...since they have a replaceable filter! That is one of the few things i don't like about the 08....that and the crappy sun visors! Lol
