MFT Wallpaper

Is there a way to display only the wall paper and not the 4 square main screen?

Not on 3.0.2 or 3.2.2, they changed it to always be the four quadrants. Only the original up to 2.1.1 or something afaik still had just the wallpaper available.

The reason that change was made was because of the new Federal guideliness on distracted driving.

Displaying just a photo or other kind of wallpaper is not allowed. Having a wallpaper behind vehicle related information is allowed.

This was just one of the changes in MFT that resulted from the new guidelines.

Even tho I agree with the general idea that a driver must not be distracted from driving and all, I still cant wrap my head around the fact that Ford had the Traction Control on/off switch buried deep, like seven steps down in the left steering menu...I mean, C'mon Ford, even the really ''Meh'' 2013 Sentra has it mounted on the dash. One press and voila. Not that you will need much traction control with 130 Hp, but you never know.

Back to topic, I too was not happy with this change. I had some pretty snappy pictures in my car and some of them were quite laughing material and I had fun changing it daily for some gigle factor for my passengers. Since MFT 3.0 and the arrival of the 4 quadrants, my DCT has taken over in the laughing department and is now the source of some pretty funny jokes :)

I still want to see something from Ford officially stating that this is why the feature was removed.

If this is the case, why would they have removed the "shortcut" screen as a home screen option? That was functional. Also, why would they have removed the ability to program the Star 1,2 favorite buttons? If someone used a couple of screens much more than others, wouldn't having the ability to toggle between these with thumb presses while one still had their hands on the steering wheel be far less of a distraction than having them remove a hand from the wheel and physically interact with the screen to get to the same screen(s)?

I'm still convinced that, just like all of the other features removed, it was simply a matter of removing things in a desperate attempt to stabilize an unstable system by making it less complex and less capable.

Besides, what's the difference between someone putting a static image on a screen and sticking a picture of their kid (or cat) to the dash?

The verbiage for displaying photographic images is stronger than the other Federal guidelines. In the case of displaying photographic images, the document says they're not allowed based on current public policy and public law. "Per se lock outs are ones based on either public policy or law."

"Per se Lock Outs. The following in-vehicle device tasks should always be locked out unless either (1) the vehicle’s engine is not running, or (2) the vehicle’s transmission is in “Park” (automatic transmission vehicles) or the vehicle’s transmission is in “Neutral” and the parking brake is on (manual transmission vehicles):

"V.5.d Displaying static photographic or graphical images not related to driving"

The other banned items are automatically scrolling text, manual keyboard entry of more than 6 characters, and video images not related to driving. Rear view cameras, satellite weather images, and Nav are allowed.

The way I read it, displaying just a photo with no vehicle info is banned but the document is silent on displaying a background image behind "data related to driving".

Yeah, that's definitely the weird one, background image behind data OK but just an image not OK? Seems to me it should be all or nothing. One could argue that the old screen was not static. There was dynamic data in the corner tabs (compass updating, street names, track names). Granted it wasn't on top of the image but it was still dynamic data on the screen as a whole.

Then again, I also don't see what is distracting about a static image. I can understand not allowing animated gifs, image slideshows, and the like but I always put things up there for the benefit of passengers, not myself. Just a little customization.

Sounds like the bureaucrats are trying to avoid saying "no porn" in so many words.

Hah! Of course you can still put any image you want behind the 4-quad screen and unlike the old wallpaper-only home screen, the now only-choice 4-quad screen is interactive. That could look even worse if you put a select image up and then have to poke the screen with your finger to do something!
