Well, I bit the bullet and ordered some new knobs. I'll let you know how it goes when I get them in and try to install them.

I got my knobs in today, only took ten days from when I ordered to receive them. I noticed the light bleed behind the knobs that some have commented about and have come up with a simple solution to eliminate it. You can see the light bleed indicated by the arrow in the first pic.

I fixed this simply by wrapping the clear plastic behind the knobs in electrical tape.

When you put the knob back on you no longer have the light bleed behind the knobs. They look so much better now. Enjoy.

Orion1222,

Thanks! I am looking to get mine in the mail soon. I do have a question for you. Did you wrap the electrical tape around the lip (inside the lip), or just put it on the outside of the clear plastic and trim flush?

Also, any troubles/suggestions removing the old knobs and putting on the new ones?

Thanks!

I trimmed the tape to about 1/4" to 1/8" of an inch from the end of the clear plastic and then wrapped it around the lip. I just used a pair of channel locks wrapped in a wash cloth and pulled straight out.

I got these in today. Did the electrical tape thing for the light leaks. I love the looks of these knobs a lot. The only downside I see with them is that it is sometimes hard to see where the knob is pointed (the light seems to be uneven depending on where it is at.). I have only seen it in the daylight so it might not be as bad a night, but in the day light it can be difficult to see where they are pointed. Am I just being too picky at this point because I do think they look much nicer than the OEM knobs.

I would think that wrapping the tape around the edges would reduce the light transmitted through the clear plastic.

Which part of the clear plastic. The front? If you mean the front that is highly unlikely. Any portion of the light that is undergoing internal reflection does so on the interior surface of the plastic, not beyond that. Any light blockage the tape stops would just bounce around behind the dash. The only possible way it would get darker is if light were reflecting off of a nearby shiny metal piece, but that seems pretty farfetched.

I did look at removing the tape, and it didn't matter, I think its more of a function of the plastic not "directing" the light as well as it does on the OEM knobs. So I decided not to wrap the tape around then lip on the knob so that the tape wouldn't peal off with the sharp bend (i.e. I just trimmed the tape flush with then of the plastic ring.)

Warning:

I still wasn't sure if I was happy with the way the indicator position worked, so I was planning on just reinstalling the OEM knobs, but I ran into an issue. Two out of the three knobs slipped back on, but would pull out super easy. It seems there was a little plastic "clip" that must have broke off, although I am still not sure if it was on the knob itself or on the shaft sticking out of the dash. Based on this, I reinstalled the new knobs, and I am definitely happy with the look of them, and the light issues I am having seem to be very angle dependent. If I am straight on all the knobs it looks good like you would expect, so I think it is just me and my OCD. The replacement knobs fit tight and no issues there, so I just wanted to let everyone know that you may not be able to put the OEM knobs back on and have them "clip" back into place if you don't like the new knobs.

All in all, I am very happy with the new knobs and I am sure after I have them in for a while I will get over any little issue I have with the lighting. (I am glad that I put the electrical tape on to reduce any light leaking from around the back side of the knob.)

I'm saying that wrapping the tape around the back edge of the knob's clear plastic (as Orion1222 mentioned he did, above) is likely reducing the amount of light entering the clear plastic at that point, thus reducing the light transmitted through the clear plastic to the front. The clear plastic functions as an internal reflective lens of sorts, and therefore covering the back edge would reduce the amount of light internally reflected to the front.

Ah okay. Wrapping around the entire ring would. Just the side shouldn't hurt any light transmittance, and would likely reduce any bleed.
