No SEL for 2013

I just got back from my dealer for some work on my Explorer and got a chance to thumb through the guides for 2013. Now, mind you, it was not the huge book with every option and their codes, just the dealer guide to changes. The one obvious one was the dropping of the SEL trim and I saw no mention of the SE Sport package either!! They did have an SE and SE Appearance package, so maybe that is the Sport package with a new name. Not sure on that one but it is a definite on the no SEL for 2013 model. Kind of makes sense I suppose since the Titanium and SEL were so close on price anyway. I didn't get to spend any time to see if or what equipment changes there were.

I dunno if that's a good thing. Means ppl will have to step up to a titanium and be forced with mft if they want niceties like auto climate control, ambient lighting, etc

In Canada i'd rather get a base sel than a loaded up se - esp with the 5spd

If you think about it, the 'SE Sport Package' less the rear disk upgrade, is really more of an appearance upgrade than anything else. Makes sense in my mind to call it such. Sport upgrade sort of alludes to performance upgrades, which it obviously doesn't really include.

Same goes for the 2013 Fusion. SE to Titanium, no SEL..Seems as if when Ford dropped the Mercury line Ford seemed to want to make the customer upscale in all lines of vechiles. Just look at what they did to the F-150, Lariat was top dog now it's 3rd place on the ladder.

Many customers have been buying the SEL Focus, will see how 2013 MY goes..

That's strange since the '13 Escape will have an SEL trim level along with Titanium. That's stupid that they won't make the trim levels consistent across models.

Depends on sales, SEL is popular but at least around here I either see SE's or Titanium, don't see a lot of other SEL's around.

Also, if the '13 SE comes with 4-wheel discs standard, that could explain why there's just an appearance package and not a sport package.

Only time will tell.

Dealers probably prefer to order loaded up SEs since they have a higher sticker price than a base 300 level SEL. But its not so good for consumers due to the higher price for fewer features. An SEL with winter package and the DCT was within 100 or so on the sticker price vs an SE Sport DCT 203a winter, but comes with ambient lighting, dual zone climate control, more soft touch materials in the cabin allegedly, et al.

I wouldn't want to be pushed into a titanium with MFT to get the dual zone climate control, alloy wheels, etc all as standard vs extra cost options.

Actually, it does upgrade the suspension from the "Standard" (found on S and SE) to the "Touring" (found on SEL and Ti). Try running a VIN through ETIS, you'll see what I mean.
