Not as familiar with the PZEV as I am with the later Foci. I hear yours is vacuum controlled, so check the hoses out. I have heard of some people who had issues with the clip that holds the actuator to the rod breaking. Find the actuator, and check to be sure it's still connected.

Okay, had to wait for this morning so I could take a good look at mine...

The problem with some things, is that if you haven't had an issue - you haven't REALLY dived into it to know ALL the details first hand - and mine hasn't given me any grief yet...

If you look downwards JUST behind the throttle body you'll see a white piece of plastic (lever arm) with a black pop on rod end at it's right side (when facing the front of the car).

You can put a finger on that, gently push down, and it should return to the top position. If it's "down" already, doesn't move easily, or the rod is disconnected from the lever - you've found the issue.

It could have come apart connection wise, the actuator may have an issue or even a hose disconnected (couldn't actually SEE that easily at a quick glance to tell you what it looks like, kinda hidden), or there could be a problem inside the intake manifold where something got "stuck" as the "code" suggests.

(Pet peeve - the objective isn't to "fix" the code, it's to fix the issue the code suggests may exist...)

The rod is up and returns fine when pushed down, I can hear a vacuum like sucking noise when I push it down.

I'd trace down the vacuum for the IMRC actuator to be sure lack of vacuum isn't causing the problem. If it's not too hard to reach, you can disconnect the vacuum from the actuator with the engine running and feel if you have vacuum there before you go searching for a red herring.

Great idea, I will try that. There is an actuator (with the arm on it) and 2 solenoids on top of the intake. It has to be one of those 3 or a vacuum line. All vacuum lines I can see are good and not collapsed or rotten.

There is suction from the tube that runs from the actuator, it hooks to the solenoid that is on the driver side of the intake (there are 2 solenoids side by side), so I figured to switch the 2 solenoids out and cleared the code via battery cable removal and after 5 start ups, no CEL. I have acces to 2 free solenoids, so the left one now will be getting changed as well and I will have a spare. I hope the CEL stays off.

BTW, this car sat idle for 4 months, I wonder if some parts needed some "exercise" to start working right, ie, tumble flaps.

solenoid might have needed the excercise as well.

amazing the gremlins after a bit of sitting...
