That's because when you loosen the cam gears as the instructions say, the VCT is already positioned where it needs to be. I did not get lucky, I followed the directions and it worked properly.

I don't care how anyone else does theres, hopefully it works for them. I've done at least 12 changes and loosen both cams every time. No issues ever. It's amazing this is still discussed. The issue at the core of this is the valve spring pressure will overcome the VCT indent spring pressure allowing the VCT to clock off center. This makes the timing off. This will only make sense if you've done install. Watch the relationship of the VCT with the cam when rotated then it will make sense. It's a real easy concept, I got a call last week on this and walked him through it.

I absolutely agree with this, even though maybe my last wording didn't sound right. If you loosen both cam gears as the instructions say, the things you are all worried about take care of themselves. Follow the directions, get a new exhaust cam gear bolt from massive to make tightening easier, make sure you have the big open end wrenches you need to hold the cams in place, and you will be good to go.

I've done a few SVT Timing belts, including my own, and I can see where you ran into some fun issues.
But after the first time, I have the right tools and help to get it down pretty quickly now. Props on working on it for the first time. -Ray-

So for all who are looking for a guide to replace your timing belt, I have found a guide.

^^ Definitely a great guideline from Ford.
I have used that guideline as well when I first did my timing belt a few years back. Ray
