I hear everyone saying that the snorkel appears restrictive. How so? It seems volume wise to have more than enough flow our 2.0 engine could ever consume and the little holes all along the length in my opinion help extend the surface area that the snorkel can reach cold air. I.E. Instead of removing it and isolating the hole it left as the only entry point for cold air. Leave the snorkel but remove that stupid Plastic liner that blocks it. Now the whole entire length of the snorkel becomes one big catch for cold air coming through the front grill (behind the Ford logo).

Let me know if this idea is way off. Too bad we can't dyno it with and without the snorkel to really see the difference.

Maybe dremel out the air splitter in the center though.

It has less than a 2" opening if I remember correctly and it has a horrible bend. Not to mention the rubber flap restricts it even more.

Yes, it IS restrictive.

I haven't cut the flap yet. I'm looking at it thinking, "what if I just make two cuts, front to back, a little wider than the intake, then somehow secure newly created flap downward to help direct airflow upward?" No? It's certainly a bitch of a spot to work in.

I cut one side of mine originally and then felt like what the hell. If I'm cutting one side I might as well just cut the entire flap out. So far no negative issues as a result. I don't really quite understand why they need to redirect every ounce of cold air right into the grill. It really makes you wonder how the intake snout was ever intended to breathe.

My car is plagued with a stumble/surge on acceleration, which is worse in hot weather or when driving in stop-and-go traffic. Feels like the timing is being retarded.

Looking at the air intake layout, I wonder if it could be part of the reason. When the car is stationary, not only is no cool air directed to the intake, but the intake is sitting pretty much just above the radiator. One would epect it would get pretty warm in there. Plus, the air snorkel would absorb considerable heat, making the intake air warm even when moving. Could the intake temperature get high enough to cause pre-ignition, thereby telling the PCM to retard the timing?

Our DI engines can run the high compression ratio because the atomized fuel injected into the cylinder cools things off. I wonder how much this ability's compromised if the intake air temp is 130-150 degrees?

I removed the snorkel and cut the drivers side flap out plus the newmission and it is a different car at low RPM alltogether. The snorkel delete did give the car a nice intake note for sure.

I just install the RX-4870

I used the end of the stock filter as the support ring. Also the curved part of the lid needs 1/4 to 1/2 inch trim so the end of the filter can extend trough the hole. I took the entire box out and tried to mach up the radius from the lower lid. I am going to make an aluminum one later. I may post picks later but the PUMA website looks the same. Look close and you can see the nice trim job they did. This may be option for some people.
