What was that?!

So, I went into the store this morning and came back out to find my car ticking very loudly and making a weird scratching sound. It sounded like if you have your speakers turned up really loud and they keep shorting out and all you hear is little snippets of sound. On top of that was the really loud ticking. Honestly, it sounded like it was about to explode. All of this was really loud. A lady getting out of her car turned around to see what was up. I didn't know what to do. I was too scared to get in the car because I thought what if this thing is about to blow? But I did get in and started it up and the sounds stopped. At first I thought is this the alarm? I haven't heard the alarm on the car yet but if that was it, it was really bizarre. It definitely got your attention whatever it was. Anyone else experience this? My car is a new build from the end of February with no MFT update yet since I haven't really had many issues with it. I was wondering if maybe that had something to do with that. Any ideas?

I don't have MFT but that's similar to what a few have reported. At least one had that happen while driving I believe. Pretty scary.

I can't really tell you because I can't hear the sound but it could have simply been something cooling down in the engine compartment. It's very common for thing to make clicking and snapping noises as heat is transferred (either warming up if the car is sitting in the sun or cooling down as the engine cools). Unless, it's really coming through your speakers, than it is something else.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't the engine cooling because I've heard that sound before and it is much quieter than this was. It was loud. And when I got inside the car it was louder. I admit I was a little scared to drive my car after that.

I probably would have ended up crashing the car if that would have happened while I was driving.

If it was coming from outside your car it was your catalytic converter cooling and is completely normal.

I had the same thing happen to me.... posted it here:

http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/s...69#post4050669

"Yesterday, after I fueled up and pressed the start button without the brake pedal to go into accessory mode, the speakers did a BUZZ!... BUZZ!... BUZZ!... BUZZ!... every 1/2 second at FULL VOLUME! It was so loud and foreign that I thought that something or someone was slamming on the top of my car! I then hit the start button with the brake pedal and started the engine and the radio came on at normal volume.

I haven't updated the software yet and am hesitant for a few reasons. Before this, I never really had any issues with MFT. There is a slight lag when buttons are pressed on the screen and that is pretty much it. I really like the layout and features. This upgrade to me seems like going backwards with the stuff Ford has taken out. "

It hasn't happened since.

That sounds like what I experienced! Very loud and everything was normal after I started the car. I am glad to know it hasn't happened for you again. Hopefully I'll be that lucky.

I would almost bet it was a MFT issue. I guess we just have to accept the fact that Ford partnered with Microsoft for their systems and if the PC and its quirky operation throughout the years is any indication then I guess we better get used to these little bugs creeping up. I have not had the noise you describe but did open the car door after my wife parked the car and it sat for at least 25 minutes and the screen lit up and showed the home screen immediately. I thought this was odd because normally the screen only lights white and then after you turn on the ignition goes through its boot cycle. It was like it never shut down? Still think the Focus is a great car with great features though. As long as the quirks are minor I can live with them...

I'm pretty sure that's a known issue with v2.11 of MFT. There's actually a youtube video in here somewhere with another member having a similar issue.
