I wouldn't worry about it to much, someone will figure it out, although it may take some time. And as for Ford voiding warrenties because of aftermarket mods, I wouldn't worry about that to much either. The only time I have seen a customers warranty be voided was when the customer is a giant a$$hole.

We'll probably see the return of the "Box". It will interface between the ECU and the harness, carry it's own tunes out for the fuel/air/timing, recieve and adjust it's own feedback, but send "normal" readings back to the ECU. Kinda like a standalone/piggyback contoller, but with feedback to the ECU to keep it happy. Remove and it's just like it was never there....

Where there's a will, there's a waiver.

Cobb demonstrated that the "protection" used for the GT-R was a joke.

The latest generation of the Infineon Tri-Core processor (used in the Bosch MED17) raises the bar considerably by implementing the protection in hardware:

The multicore architecture features a hardware security module (HSM) to meet upcoming security requirements to better protect automotive applications from tampering or potential hacking attacks. The HSM uses leading edge hardware-based security technology developed by Infineon.

Is there is a bug in the HSM that can be exploited by a tuner? I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

W/O reading on this, I want to say it's not a big deal. I believe what the protection is for is to lock anyone out from 'sucking' the raw code from the box ... as would be done by most grassroots tuners. I'd be quite sure the ECU can be tuned via 'update' methods. Ford would almost have to leave some type of way for their employees to update emissions data and such if they need to. I can't see the point of swapping box's to update, too much down time.

Other thing is, no one's saying you have to keep the factory box in the car to make it run. In the most basic sense, any ECU will work in any vehicle. It's just a matter of wiring things correctly, verifying sensor ranges and making sure the ECU can control what it needs to.

... and odds are a tech document from Infineon will turn up eventually that will help unlock the mystery.

Wait.. so what if you buy a spare unit and keep your original one stock safe somewhere.
Break/tune the spare one, install that one and have fun.

Anything happens put the stock one you kept safely somewhere back?

Funny, the ST management has been tuned already by a hand full. My Jeep is "locked" and I only know of one person in the US that does the tuning on it.
