Once again, I am all for trying to prevent pollution, but Fox News has it right when they point out that regardless of what we do, China is polluting more than we ever have, and that's a fact. Great to see the OP getting that mileage, and rest assured, China owns us (we owe them trillions of dollars) and maybe the environmentalist will be glad to know that once they are the worlds superpower, they will force us all into cattle cars to commute, so they can all drive whatever they want.

Unfortunately, if everyone did the same we'd have chaos; good thing you have a different set of rules to live by.

Catalytic converters were not introduced to combat global warming. They reduce oxides of nitrogen, unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, all of which contribute to general air pollution or smog. You want to go back to environmental conditions of the 50s and 60s (except worse because there's a lot more of us)? Not me.
Good points Dan50.

To the OP, I understand your point that someone driving a legal Hummer is probably doing more harm that your cat-less Focus. But, it may be the brash tone of your pronouncements that are raising people's flames.

I am not convinced of global warming and man's input to it but before cats on cars and emission controls on power plants, lakes were literally being wiped out of fish by acid rain. No exaggerated Gore-science was need to see the truth of that.

Im using less gas by 25-35% so what's more of a crisis these days oil or your screwed up sense of doing the right things. How many times do you fly instead of drive? How many times do you get stuff shipped to you?

I can go all day.
I know you could, but i agree with you. Traffic, stop lights, stop signs cause us to use more gas. If your using less gas you are producing less emissions. Well you would think...

I think the biggest offenders worldwide are manufacturing and power generation. Especially the dirty coal plants which are popping up daily in China.

Nevertheless, I'm a marine engineer and the shipping industry is on the cusp of a monumental effort on reduction of CO2 emissions at the eventual cost of hundreds of millions, of not several billion, dollars to the industry over the next decade. All sorts of initiatives for reducing fuel use and burning cleaner fuel or scrubbing the exhaust.

But any savings in industries such as ours, autos, aviation, etc. will be completely lost in the huge growth of dirty emissions from power plants and manufacturing plants, especially in China, India, etc.

So a small percentage of cars on the road without cats ain't gonna have no measurable effect.

Strictly speaking using less fuel would create less emissions if the emissions control equipment was there and functional. A motorcycle uses far less fuel than a normal gas powered car, however the motorcycle pollutes far more in terms of NOx, NMOG/SMOG/ etc pollutants because the emissions control laws have not been as stringent on motorcycles as they have on cars. Sure a motorcycle might produce less CO2 emissions due to direct fuel use, but the other pollutants are generally 300-8000% worse than those for a catalyzed car.

Removing the catylast would only increase the emissions of CO, Oxides of Nitrogen, and other pollutants, even if you did burn less fuel and create less CO2 emissions.

Might be just a slight exageration but generally agreed: China = bad. Wikipedia says they emitted 30% more CO2 than us in 2008 but that skyrocketed to 50% more in 2010. By now they could be double and it's growing every day. And that's just what we know about and can measure.....

It has been beat to death but the 2012 forum is so new so they haven't seen 1000+ threads flooded with this stuff. Its personal preference when it comes to cars especially these little cars where they have better chances with no cats to pass emissions then that big 6.6l...

Yes no cats is bad but its much worse if say I drove a truck as my daily.

In the larger scheme of pollutants thousands of cars like mine even hundred of thousands could be without cats and have no MEASURABLE effect on anything there's just far worse out there.

Don't get me wrong, I am all about doing the right thing, but the hyprocrisy is terrible.
Firstly, no one flies every single day. They drive 90% of the time at least. Second, JadeRaven made the claim that a person flying a jet one time creates more pollution than a person using a car for the entire lifespan of a car. I showed that this is nowhere near true and is definitely hyperbole. Did you not even click the article and read the first couple of sentences before posting? C'mon, man, use your head.
