2012 Focus Goes Forward When Shifted Into Reverse

Hello,

My 2012 Focus will often go forward when I shift into reverse.

Sometimes, I will shift into reverse, and the car will move forward. I step on the brake, and the car then goes into reverse.

This makes street parking dangerous. Luckily, I haven't hit any cars as of yet.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Thanks.

This happens on flat areas, such as when I'm trying to parallel park.

The car sometimes drifts backwards a bit when I have it in drive on an uphill portion and am stopped.

Have you ever driven a manual transmission? Think of your focus' transmission as an automated manual. So, as a manual will do, the car will roll slightly forward or backward at stop lights and such. My Mom's 2012 kind of feels like ford tried to make the transmission pull a little when letting off the brake like a normal automatic would but sometimes it just acts clumsy. I'm thinking yours is probably doing the same thing and yes, it does take some getting used to.

I probably didn't describe the problem correctly.

Here's an example: I'm driving down a road and see a parking spot I want to take. I pull up alongside the car in front, and put the car into reverse. The car shudders strongly, but goes into reverse. I back in, and shift into drive to straighten out the car and get closer to the curb. I put it into reverse again, and instead of going backwards the car starts to go forward(not drifting or rolling, faster than that). I slam on the brake, the transmission shudders, I take off the brake and step on the accelerator, and the car goes into reverse, as it should.

This has occurred several times, always on flat roads.

Hi NYCZPlan,

Let's have a Customer Service Manager review your concern. Send me a PM with the VIN, current mileage, personal and dealer contact info and I'll begin the escalation process.

Thanks,

Noemi

I see that this is an old post, but our 2012 focus recently did this too so I am wondering if this is common or has been resolved. Our focus is an automatic, also happened on flat ground...in a parking lot. We have been "problemsolving" (being generous in my description) with Ford for months now and have recently PM-ed Crystal about our shaking, shuddering, lurching, grinding, etc, but am wondering why we are left to troubleshoot ourselves.
