How To: Paint Chrome Ring Around Emblem and Tint Emblem

I hope this is in the right section. I am fairly sure I did though. This mod is for anyone who doesnt like chrome. I dont really expect this to be a big hint, and there is already a how to (maybe even more than one) on how to tint your emblem already. I was mainly just showing how to paint the chrome ring because I felt really clever. I was putting a new grille on and felt like I should do something to my emblem. I apologize for not having a before picture, just go out and look at the one on your car. lol

Materials:
-Emblem (I used the one on my grille if it matters)
-Piece of masking tape wide enough to cover emblem
-Small razor knife
-Spray tint, I used the Rustoleum brand
-Whatever color spray paint you want(I used Krylon Fusion black spray paint)

The knife I used:


1. First I removed the grille. I know there is other how-tos on how to do that, but it is really simple. I wont go into great detail, but open the hood and remove the cover on top of the grille. (I didnt have to do any of this because my grille was held in by chicken bands because all 4 tabs were broken! haha) Disconnect the turn signal bulbs, and remove all 4 screws. To get the emblem out, simply unscrew the 2 screws on the back of the emblem. This takes maybe 10 minutes max to do Also, Make sure the emblem has been thoroughly cleaned!

2. I put a piece of wide masking tape over the front of the emblem to cover the whole thing.


3. Take the knife and trace the small crack around the front of the emblem. Be careful to go slow. If you go fast, you can scratch the emblem.


4. Remove all of the tape on the outside of the emblem.


5. Spray your spray paint on the chrome ring. I believe I did 3 coats, but do as many as you feel like doing. lol Then remove the tape.


This next step is optional. To be honest, I am not 100% sure I like it. lol So if you dont like it, dont do it.

6. Since the color I chose was black, I simply held the emblem about a foot away (not directly in the line of being sprayed) and sprayed lightly over the emblem. I didnt want it black, because I like everyone knowing I drive a Ford. Of course the most distintive part is that big bluw oval, which is now darker. Since I drive a black car I feel like it looks better. This pic doesnt really show how much darker it is, but if people want I can post a pic of the grille on my car so you can see the difference.

*note* if you are painting your chrome ring red (or some other color to match your car) you will have to put another piece of tape over the emblem and do the process over again. You will just remove the center piece of tape after you cut it instead of removing the outer piece of tape. Then tint the emblem.

So there you have it. This mod would only take a few minutes if we didnt have to wait for paint to dry and it all depends on what color and if you tint the emblem or not. It took me an hour because I did so many coats, was taking picture, and helping my dad split wood during the process.
