Serpentine Belt Tensioner, Zetec

I get about 30 seconds of squealing every time I start up my '03 SVT Focus with 88k miles.

So I thought my water pump was going, and armed with a new belt, pump and these directions, http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=184383, I went off to my garage. Once I drained the coolant, put a jack under the oil pan and removed the motor mount, I was unable to remove the screws holding the pulley onto the pump because the belt did not have enough tension to hold it in place. In fact the serpentine belt didn't seem to have all that much tension, and I couldn't get the tensioner to budge much by using a 15mm wrench on the center bolt (it just seem to loosen/tighten the bolt).

Does this sound like a bad tensioner/stretched belt? Should one be able to detension the belt by putting a wrench on the center bolt? How hard is this to change (looks like there are two bolts holding it on)? TIA.

Yea sounds like your tensionair is bad, it should be able to move when you put a wrench 14 or 15MM on the center bolt, so I'd change that out.

And yes it is just 2 bolts, but on my normal Zetec, (IIRC) I had to remove the harmonic balancer to make it easier to get at and out.

Could be both but you're about due for a timing belt if you haven't done it. Save a lot of time and do it all at once. And by about due I mean do it before it breaks and or we'll have one less SVT on the road.

Yeah, I'm aware of the 90k recommendation for the timing belt. Got a good link for the procedure on the SVT?

This is an alternator change thread, but scroll down and you'll see the belt tensioner stuff. http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=276720

Here is a write up I did on Zetec timing belt change, the SVT should be about the same, it just has a different compression ratio.

Timing belt should be the same as a regular ZETEC but I think there is an extra step because of the VCT on the intake side. Hopefully someone will chime in on that for you
