IMRC and mpg

hey, getting some horrible gas mileage and want to rule some things out...i heard on here that the IMRC not functioning correctly can lower the mpg...at what rpm does this engage the shorter runners? will any malfunction of the IMRC trigger a CEL? thanks!!

it will nly trigger the CEL if the box isnt functioning properly. If the knob on the stock plastic lever device breaks, then it wont.

The switch over occurs 5.5-6k rpms into short runner. If the IMRC isn't pulling the lever and the associated tumble flaps into long runner, youre in short runner mode which is worse on fuel economy.

i get crappppppppy gas mileage in this car in stop and go miami traffic, but on the highway its 27-28.

Make sure all maintenance is up to date.

Plugs/wires/coil
fuel filter
air filter
clean MAF
Timing belt
tire pressure 32-36 psi
clean fuel system
fresh oil and trans fluid

The biggest factor is your right foot. Keep the load and rpm down. you really shouldn't need to be north of 4,000 rpm at any time if you're trying to get good mileage. this is a high revving engine and its fun in the upper rev range, but thats where it drinks the gas.

Check vacuum lines too. Theres a set that goes to the fuel-rail and sensor right on the top of the intake manifold. If that is leaking, your efficiency goes down.
