So maybe I missed it, but I want to splice into a wire by the passenger fuse panel. What color wire to I hook up to?? I've done this on other cars without a problem, but i was able to see the wire on the back of fuse panel. This panel is "sealed" it seems.

I just got my third ticket, because I've been putting this off. Any help is much appreciated

I followed the experience of jdog913 here: http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/s....php?p=3962814 using an 'add a circuit' to the passenger side fuse panel. Can you post a picture - I didn't know that some fuse boxes were sealed.

Yea that is what I think I'm going to do. I just found the add a circuit at autozone.

By sealed I mean the wire is not exposed behind the fuse. Instead on this car the fuse wires run internally to those big plugs on the left hand side. You will see all the color wires coming out of those plugs.

Ok, I took some pictures and maybe if you're confused this will help you out. I purchased a add-a-circuit found here. I used a hardwire kit got this one from ebay. I cut the positive side and crimped on the end of the add-a-circuit. I also removed the ground and installed a similar larger diameter end.



I then ran the wire up the side a-pillar and tucked the wire in between headliner. I was getting sick of the old suction cups so I just 3M'd the mount in the dot matrix section so the detector isn't visible from the outside




For Rat:
These are the two plugs all the wires are coming off of. On old cars all the wires were directly behind the fuses. If you push the tabs on the bottom you can move the box around and see the back. There are no wires visible. Therefore before you could just look behind the fuse and you could see what color wire to splice into.
You can see the plugs on the other photo. These are the wires you would "tap" into.

I can't tell which plugs these are. The ST guys said look for a white wire with a brown stripe. I'm having a hard time finding this.

Right now, I have an add-a-fuse, but it turns the detector off after ~30min, I'd rather it turn on/off with ignition (hence tapping the wire).

Can someone post better pics of the wire I'm looking for?

You can add a toggle switch when using an add a fuse. I would highly recommend not splicing since no offense to you but the majority of people improperly splice wires together and the reliability is greatly decrease,

I forget the # I used, I tried most of them, and just left it on the one where it shut off after 30min

I had it hardwired in my Subaru, I just vampire tapped the auto-dimming mirror using the hardwire kit. The Focus wires seem to be an inconsistent mess. I'd like to tap a power near the fusebox since it is most convenient. I just checked the overhead and that's a mess as well.

I don't want a toggle switch, I like things as automated as possible. No point in running a switch to an accessible locale when I could just unplug the detector just as easily.

I think your problem is the fuse that you tapped into it. Could have a thermal overload switch in the circuit which shuts off after a set time. I'm not an expert in that field. Use the fuse # I recommended (#85) under the glove box. I've had no problems after a year, and it would save you from finding and splicing wires together.

What is your fuse 85 for? It shuts on/off with the car? I thought I tried it and it never shut off (even after 30min). I can try again if you're certain.

Yes mine shuts off when the car is off. But I should note I have an actual key, I don't have the key less start.
