02 SVT Focus with issues

I've got a car that i love to drive and is such a joy to drive when it's working well. It's and 02 SVT Ford Focus with a 2. 0 litre dohc engine. unfortunatley I have been fighting with the thing for the past while. Due to a bad timing issue and a dropped cylinder I have recently had the head of the car replaced. It remained in the yard of the mechanic's for most of last winter. As a result when they put the new head on they told me it needed a new alternator and battery. Within two days of getting the car back both headlights burnt out and it had a hesitation at higher revs. After the lights were replaced and an alternator replaced (again) they said that they found a chaffed wire going to the ecu under the passenger seat. When I got the car back it hesitated worse and the lights seem to flicker quite a bit and then the check engine light and battery light started coming on. The car needs a down stream o2 sensor and now hesitates quite badly from a stopped position. Recently it backfired and now the brakes feel like a rock and do not work and the car revs wildly up and down. . . . in a hunting fashion.
I realize that some of this stuff may be un related to eachother but I'm kinda at my wits end with the car and think that the mechanics that went at it in an attempt to fix the car did so with a butcher knife.
Has anybody got an idea as to where I should start looking? I was going to build a ground wire kit and put it on before the latest bits started happening.

I would look for a vac leak at the hose to the brake booster , ground wire kit wont do anything for you even if you didnt have all these other issues

Makes perfect sense, I just realized that during the most recent back fire it cracked the intake manifold along it;s seam. Now I'm left with, what seems to be, electrical issues. Why does it surge badly from a takeoff and hesitate in the top end and why are the lights flickering like crazy?
