I've read that upgrading the Sync system cars (6 speakers) doesn't do a lot of good without adding an amp due to the system's DSPs. Did I misread this, because I'd love to install some good components in the car to improve the SQ. Thanks.

From the pictures of the dual cone paper woofers on the first page, I can't see how new speakers could really hurt the sound quality.

Adding an amp and replacing the head unit would also help of course, but you would essentially lose SYNC.

Upgrading only the front door speakers to Infinity 6502ix made a huge improvement to my 6-speaker system. The stock woofers in the front doors (not dual-cone in the 6-speaker system) are of poor quality--small magnets, paper cones and plastic basket. Leave the stock a-pillar tweeters connected. They blend well with the upgrades and improve imaging, especially when a passenger is onboard.

Those Infinities have solid, clean bass and the clarity of the mid to upper frequencies is much improved over stock.

I read that they have adjustable tweeters 0 to +3db. Is that something you did, and how was imaging affected? Also, did the low frequencies drop off or did the mids become more muddled by the increased power requirements for the speakers? The factory speakers are fairly boomy and muddle the mids quite a bit, IMO. My EQ settings for reference -

Treble: +3 around town and louder volume listening, +4 hwy and lower volume listening
Mid: +2
Bass: Flat 98% of the time
Optimized for all passengers.

Anyone try just upgrading the door speakers with mid-bass drivers - in other words, one-way speakers?

I left my tweeters flat (0dB). They sound great, and the imaging is at least as good as stock, if not better. I rotated the speakers to angle the tweeters toward my ears. I didn't even try the +3dB setting, but I would have considered it if I weren't using the stock A-pillar tweeters. I felt that not using the stock tweeters would be detrimental to the imaging, especially when the passenger side is occupied.

There are no increased power requirements for the Infinities. They have a sensitivity of 93dB @ 1 meter. The speakers are VERY efficient, and designed to match with low-power factory amps. The factory amp can drive these speakers at very high volume levels with no discernible distortion.

ALL frequencies are clearer than the stock setup--clearer mids, sparkling highs and tight bass. At first, you may think you've lost some bass response but you'll quickly realize that it's just that you're missing the sloppy, muddy overhang from the stock woofers. The bass response of the Infinities is very good, without the "boominess".

My EQ settings w/stock speakers:

Treble: +3
Mid: +1 or +2
Bass: +1 or +2

My EQ settings w/Infinities:

Treble: +1
Mid: 0
Bass: +1

As you can see, the Infinities require less EQ to achieve a flat response. Or, at least, what my ears say is "flat" response. I always leave the optimization for all passengers. The imaging with driver optimization is terrible, IMO--"artificial", if you will. The treble @ +1 is greatly improved over the stock treble at +3. I feel that the stock tweeters roll off somewhat at the upper frequencies.

After hearing the improved treble and upper mids from the Infinities, I don't think I would go this route. The only improvement you would achieve by only replacing the woofers is in midbass frequencies and below. I would consider installing separates but, I don't believe they would be as efficient as these coaxials, and I didn't want the hassle of mounting tweeters and a crossover.

That's a very good write-up. What about installing mid-bass drivers in the rear doors to compliment your new front setup? Do you think the bass would improve without effecting overall SQ?

Yes, it probably would. That's not a bad idea, IMO, if you're not concerned about rear-seat sound quality. If I were to upgrade the rears, I think I'd just put the same coaxials in the rear.

I'll let you know what route I take and post it up in here. I'm a big Memphis Audio fan and if their PR line is still as good as the 10+yr old speakers in my T-Bird, I may go with them.

I have the 6 speaker set up and no sync system. Did I get extras!? Great post though I will do some upgrading for sure now. Now we need a thread for sub/amp installation...
