One of the mechanics at my shop just bought a focus with the SPI in it and I asked what was wrong with it and he replied the motor is locked up...i bet him $20 it dropped a valve. Needless to say he bought me lunch the next 3 days lol. It had 183,xxx

Another story about these, back in 2003-2004 when I kinda figured I wanted a focus for a first car, one of the salesmen at a dealership said ALWAYS look under the hood with these, and if you see this motor (the SPI), shut the hood and walk away.

As far as I know/ in my case, Completely random. wife, BIL & I were driving around town, car had a bit of hesitation going up a small hill - which I don't think was related to valve issue- went to accelerate out of a drive thru & pffft.

hahaha. i wish i had known when i bought my spi back in 05. it only lasted 4 years

My '03 has knocked a few times in the past few months on early morning start-ups. I thought it was cold weather. Should I start worrying and register the Crown Vic again just in case?

I realise this is normal, but it sounded louder then any other time or car I've owned. It concerned me before I read this thread.

my poor focus had horrible timing, it was after i had gotten rear-ended by some idiot, but while it was in the shop it pooped out, exactly 220k miles. i was in rental cars for about a month or so. this was late march- early april 2011.
