There is no best answer. The owners guide says up to 10,000 miles or 1 year if the intelligent oil life monitor doesn't indicate sooner. Most people here are either early changers (before 2000 miles the first time), or the rest are a mix of 5-7500-10,000 miles on the semi synthetic factory fill. Others use full synthetic for longer drain intervals afterwards.

My wife's hatch at over 6,000 miles oil looks clear, feels fine, smells fine. I'm going with the factory 10,000 or smart oil monitor.

Its usually better to rotate the tires around 5000 miles afaik, but I suppose
it comes down to personal preference as long as the car is not consuming oil at an elevated rate.

Think it depends how you use it right? I had nice clear oil when I went to a road trip and had the car running for a few hours. But when I came back the oil changed and got dark quicker? Anyways I used that my ford website where you update your miles. Usually they tell you when you need one. But I will do my oil change and rotate my tires soon

I hear ya! I too am an engineer. So when I am told the car needs something beyond what I brought it in for, my spidey senses go wild. Every once in a while, I'll crawl underneath to look at things. Not much to see with that big aero shield or whatever they call it. Also, my dealer gave me a lifetime power train warranty. So any issues falls on them when they do the service.
Having the 20k service done tomorrow. Gonna whip out my $10 coupon, grab some coffee and a magazine and relax.

Yeah, I rotate my tires and change my oil at 5000 miles -- just did it last night at 15,465 miles. I use Mobil-1 5W-20 and could go to 10,000 miles but I rotate the tires at 5000 miles so why not change the oil as well. It cost my $25 for 5qt bottle of Mobil-1 5W-20 and $4 for a Motorcraft 910S fliter at WalMart -- total, after tax, about $32 or $0.0064/mile. Gas is about 15X more expensive.

I did my first oil change at 294 miles. My next change will be at 1294 miles, then I will follow a 3000 mile change interval. I am kind of old school about these things :)
