This ^^^ The NA 2.0 engine in the MK3 has limited ways of taking advantage of higher octane. It probably can do even more with a tune, which we will have soon (oh, that rhymes)...

My local Sunoco offers 93 octane. I hate running anything else, but I'm typically broke. As far as mileage I don't have any conclusive numbers as my city driving is dominate during the week, the. 90-10 highway on the weekend. I notice much much less "bog" at mid rpm with 93.

I use premium exclusively. The car runs better, shifts better, and gets better fuel economy.

I'm on my second tank of 93, engine seems smoother but I haven't noticed a change in MPG since we are now on summer gas and I installed the K&N drop in filter today. Snorkel delete this weekend.

I also only use premium. my favorite that i've tried so far is Shell V-Power so I try only to get that. The first time I put 93 octane into the tank (was running only 87 before), I felt like I was driving a new, sportier car. It felt like "the beast was awakened" haha. But yeah once a tune comes out this baby is going to be.... awesome.

I pay avg $4-5 more per tank when using 93 oct vs 87 oct, but the mileage gained per tank makes it the same cost per mile, if not better.

I too only run premium and the mileage increase more than offsets the cost difference.
I think this is mainly due to premium having no ethanol in my area and regular having 10%.

I had the same exact response when I went from 87 to shells 93. I will never use anything but 93 now and being my mileage has improved with the 93, the cost per mile is about the same. Being our mkIII focuses engine is 12:1 compression, it can definitely take advantage of the premium.

What works best for some doesn't directly translate to another. I've seen people say they have gotten better fuel economy on nearly all of the different octane ratings and (realistically speaking) they are right for all of the variables that they have that are under their control and at their disposal.
Quoted For Truth.

Temperature, weather, and wind play a pretty significant role. As well as the variation in traffic from day to day. That's why when I started reading this thread, I decided to experiment for myself.

I forgot to mention that the premium tanks I used were most likely winter blends... But I doubt that would make a serious difference.

I do seem to notice that the car is quicker with premium, although I'm not convinced it is true.

Gas mileage (which i track religiously on fuelly) is the same. The only time I notice increased MPG is when the premium fuel used is also ethanol free.

I get 3% better mileage with 91 octane, which I expect is solely due to premium being ethanol free. Since premium is about 10% more expensive here it is not worth it.
