Looking at new cars, 14 Focus Ti hatch!

Hey all, new poster here. I had an unfortunate accident last week and totaled my 12 Mazda 3. Now I am in the market for a new car. Been looking at the new Mazda 3 as well as the focus. Gonna be honest, never been a big Ford fan but the focus looks really nice and lots of features.

The specific car I found is the 14 focus titanium in champion blue or something like that. It has the handling package on it and looks very nice. After researching though I am kind of scared of the transmission. See lots of up-down reviews and it's throwing me off. I want a sporty looking hatch but I also want reliability as I commute 50 miles a day.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks!

The current Focus has been in production for 3 years.
If you don't believe that Ford could resolve the known issues with the transmission in that period of time, don't buy a Ford.

Based on empirical evidence, the current (2014) transmissions appear to be quite reliable.

I used to own a 2013 focus but got rid of it when the second engine went bad. I then bought a 2014 Mazda 3. The Mazda is a much nicer place to sit. On the same commute I get better fuel mileage with the Mazda and the engine goesnt act funny at low rpms like the focus engine. I have/had manual transmissions in both cars.

If you get a focus, get a manual transmission. Otherwise look else where. There's always the focus ST.

My 2012's DCT was troublesome beginning at 500 miles. My 2014's is fine so far at 1000 mi. It's still stumbles a little at low speed sometimes, but that's just inherent with the DCT. The Mazda3's power train will surely be much smoother, but you'll pay thousands more for a comparably equipped car. I personally can't stand the alarm clock on the dash and unavailability of 17s on the lower trim levels of the 3.

Get the Focus and accept the inherent attributes of the DCT from the beginning.

II actually did find a 2013 Focus ST used yesterday with only like 5k miles on it for practically the same price as the 2014 Focus Titanium. Would that be a better buy or ??

Edit: Not a big fan of the color though... It's the bright Tangerine Yellow. Seats looks pretty awesome though with the yellow leather accents.

No one on here will admit it, but One of the car magazine's recent long term review of the ST said the noise-vibration-harshness gets tiresome on long drives. Someone on another thread recently said the Ti with handling package is not as stiff as the ST. These might be serious considerations for your 50 mile commute.

I have a 2013 Titanium Hatch with handling package. I've had it since April and it just turned 30,000 miles.
I commute from the burbs to Manhattan every day.
I had that front end rattle issue when new, but resolved at first service. No other issues to date (knocking on wood). Steeda CAI and cat back exhaust.
I'm completely happy with it. Comfortable, peppy, sounds great and all the tech stuff you could want.
Two thumbs up here.
Good luck on your decision.
