2003 zx3 with 2.3L

I just bought a focus a 2003 zx3 with 127k miles on it. I got it for 3500, I actually bought it from my dads mechanic and I trust the people. The story is some guy owned it and put on a few mods like a CAI and a stainless steel exhaust and some interior lighting it sounds pretty cool and looks pretty cool. Now the guy who had it Hydrolocked the engine so the mechanic went through and fixed it up such as a new transmission cause that was damaged two as well as something with the front axel but the biggest thing is they put in a 2.3 L engine with 38k miles on it. Now I've done some research and that car I dont think came with a 2.3l option that year. I have a few questions.
1. Is the 2.3l better then stock
2. If not should I invest in putting it back to stock
3. I live in CNY lots of snow and wet and I think I wana remove the CAI what are my options besides from stock that are safe
4. Did I get a good deal? 03 Zx3 127k miles with 2.3l with 38k miles?

I have a 03 zx3 2.3l, so yes the 2.3l definatly came in that year, and as far as is a 2.3l with 38K on it a good deal?

Hell MF'in yes man. Do you know what was in there before?

Zetec DOHC
SPI
Duratec 2.0l
Duratec2.3l?

As far as the CAI goes, if you live in a area where puddles and a lot of water is common, then you might want to put stock back on, or get a Short Ram air intake.

I feel dumb i was just rereading through the paper work that came with it and i missed a section where it states that it came with a 2.3L PZEV. I dont know what 2.3 is in there now just thats its a 2.3.
Yeah I was thinking of going back to stock will I notice mush from the CAI to stock or from stock to a short ram? I normally drive slow but I used to drive a 96 Honda civic and the difference in power to the focus is quite nice

Another question of mine is being that my car is an automatic, is there any real point to some different performance mods, like a cai or short ram, the exhaust. Like do I gain from these and is there more performance mods i could invest in that would make a difference or is it pointless on an automatic. Like could take the time and learn and mod the car to beat say a civic si in a 1/4 mile? or should i keep this car for commuting and invest in a different car?

Well, Focus's are economy cars for one, BUT, like all cars, for example a civic si, can be modified to possibly run a 12 second 1/4 mile. It just takes time & money my friend. Build up the internals, tune it, header, intake, cos manifold, etc etc. That being said, the focus is a great track car! build up the suspension and go do some time attacks! ha.

You can Identify whether or not it is a PZEV by looking at the exhaust system.

If the exhaust has two cats and three O2 sensors, then it is a PZEV, if it only has 1 cat and 2 O2 sensors, then it is a normal 2.3l.

Yea I wish I had one with that low of miles, mine is a PZEV and I just finish up doing the clutch/flywheel/slave at 118K.

Yeah then mine is also a PZEV, being an automatic where would you guys suggest I spend money next to increase performance? I already have an mbrp exhaust and an f2 cai

Now I have heard and read this that its not worth it to tune an automatic. Why is a manual better? also can you still mod a automatic and get noticeable gains?
