I can only talk about my small little area I've lived in for almost a year 2 hours south of San Francisco.
If you're looking for along the coast, anywhere from Monterey north up to Santa Cruz is really nice. It's within commuting distance of San Jose (~1-1.5 hrs). South of Monterey is Pacific Grove, Carmel and Carmel Valley which are really expensive. Don't live in Salinas! There's been 12 homicides there so far this year. That brings housing costs down and there are some good areas (North Salinas), but if you don't know the place, don't roll the dice. Especially with kids.

Salinas hahahah in Stockton the record count this year is 57 Murders. And I live in Sacramento. It all depends on what you are looking for job wise.
I work as a Security Director and I always see jobs open. What makes it seem like it is hard is the fact that some people are on "Unemployment benefits" and dont want to take a job in retail, cutting grass, or flipping burgers. Of course the economy has hit us hard, but in the end it all depends on helping yourself and not depending on handouts. All I can say is WELCOME........... PS if you get a CA Guard card I can get you a job in Security.
