Once again, as I've already stated multiple times, this is a completely irrelevant question. I realize it's hard to understand, since people see idiotic movies like Hackers and think anything can be cracked, but I promise you it is irrelevant. There is *NO* possible way to alter the files, at all, and allow the installation to still be valid.

I'll give the exact numbers here, so there can be no doubt. Most PKE uses 128-bit encryption (meaning, 128 digits that are either 0 or 1). That doesn't sound too complicated, until you realize what that means. In order to figure out how many combinations are possible, multiple by 2 128 times (meaning: 2x2x2x2...etc). That's over 34,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 combinations. A computer that could do 1 billion combinations per second would take 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years to crack a standard 128-bit encryption code. Every browser in the world uses this type of encryption for various tasks, as do encrypted installations (this one).

If you're still worried it could be "faked"...stop. It's almost completely impossible for that to happen.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the best computers that currently exist can only actively compute around 1 billion combinations per second. There are only roughly 3 computers like this that exist in the world, and they cost hundreds of millions, a piece. The average home computer (even the fastest you can buy) can only compute roughly 1% of that amount.

But trying to scare people into not updating by saying it could void their vehicle warranty? Not cool. I downloaded and installed it, and it works fine. Considering the install is signed it wouldn't really be possible for someone to "create one" or modify the existing one without the install failing (which would have no effect). Either way, it wouldn't void the vehicle warranty.

What you're seeing is a lot of people *really* unhappy with the old system that have been using it for 1-2 years with no word from Ford on a fix. Ford finally releases information about the new fix and it doesn't come out for 6+ months. Now it's being sent out and it isn't put up on the website. It's a whole series of mistakes by Ford that seem to almost intentionally screw over the customers.

The *EASIEST* distribution would be throwing it on the website. It would take less than 20 minutes and would allow everyone, and their mothers, to download it and install it. I understand that Ford spent a good amount of money buying and sending out the USB sticks, but if the update is ready...post it. Some people, especially those on boards such as this one, don't want to have to wait another week or 3 to get the update that should have arrived a year ago.
Depending on your vehicle software configuration, the Performance Upgrade is now available on the Update & Customize page on the SYNC Owner website. For Navigation-equipped vehicle owners, if you choose to download the upgrade, please note you will have a non-functioning Navigation system until you receive the new SD card by mail.

That's what I am thinking too.

lol it's improbable, but possible. You have the same of getting it on the first try as the last though...so I doubt anyone will even bother trying. Using a standard computer and running it for a few months wouldn't even be like a drop in the ocean...it would be like dropping a grain of sand into the ocean. Completely ineffectual.

I'm just trying to explain to people that there is *absolutely* no need to worry about someone hacking it.

Any comment on the rest of the posts in this thread about missing features, steering wheel favorites buttons, volume bar, lost fuctionality on home screen, and general lockups/glitches members have already found with the new system?

Are your colleagues noting the comments on this thread for the next revision?

Where is the best place to voice our feedback to Ford?

Aww I'm just goofing around. It gets a little testy in here sometimes. Just trying to lighten the mood!

Just finished installing the new update. I sat in the back and surfed the net on my laptop until it was done. The install went smoothly up until the end point when after the service pack and everything was installed except for the last 3 files. I got a "not compatible with your system" blah blah. I just pulled the usb key out and plugged it back in. Had to do it once or twice while the system muscled its way through and they were installed. USB keys are flaky to begin with. That's why I'm guessing it did that. I agree with someone earlier who said an SD card was the way to go.

Other then that, everything went well. I played around for a bit - there is indeed a valet mode and other then little design choices that seemed to have made most people a little bit batty I don't find fault with it. It's smooth, it's fast, response is practically instant now. I didn't test any of the voice commands but the phone part of it went very smooth. I had plugged in my zune when I decided I wasn't going to hang around for another hour while it indexed or whatever. I'll have to report back on that later if anything out of the ordinary happens.

Overall though, I'm pretty pleased with the whole install. Took about an hour.

Oh I don't know if anyone has posted it yet, but Valet mode is in Settings - Vehicle (I never use a valet so I doubt I'll ever use it.)

Funny that with all the feedback we're giving them, we get a scripted response instead of encouraging a REAL constructive diologue with a meaningful response from Ford. IF you get a response, they will tell you to post any ideas on the Ford social site. But when I posted my idea to that site it was not approved to post. And it was not inflammatory in any way.
