The software upgrade, which dealers received today, is aimed to prevent system crashes, the automaker said. Ford redesigned more than 1,000 screens on the system, to make buttons and graphics larger and more responsive.
There's the answer. Not just interface, but primarily reliability.

According to the Detroit Free Press
"Dealers will receive their flashdrives today to update the vehicles on their lots and be ready to help customers. "

And... apparently the SD cards are not shipping and installing the update will disable the NAV system without the SD new card.

Though... that may be just dealers and the few people that have received it already.

Here's the official instructions

The guys in that thread are techs that got it. Dealers are receiving the update and an allotment of SD cards to provide to those that come in for the upgrade and have Nav. When they run out of SD cards they have to request more.

For us owners with Nav the SD card and USB will ship together.

The vehicle must be running, and in park with the parking brake engaged in order to initiate the installation process. The vehicle may be driven once the PERFORMANCE UPGRADE has begun although some functionality may be limited/unavailable during the installation process, such as phone/media player usage, rear view camera, & climate control via the touch screen (conventional climate control buttons on the instrument panel will remain working).

Once the PERFORMANCE UPGRADE is complete, an “Installation Complete” message may appear accompanied by an “OK” button. Upon completion of the PERFORMANCE UPGRADE, customers should report successful installation via SYNCMYRide.com as indicated in their installation instructions or contact the In-Vehicle Technology Team at 800.392.4040
