Metal grinding noise when starting.....Sometimes....

Every 8-10 starts, for no known reason, when starting my car, instead of an engine turning over, I get a nasty grinding noise, as fast as I hear it, I stop starting it, turn it to off, and try again, then it works fine

hi Dracus124

it sounds like your starter motor on its way out could try removing it and getting it reconditioned or a new 1, that's if that's what the problem is

hope this helps

When it comes to little issues like that unless someone else has experienced it they aren't going to know. I have lots of threads on car issues that go unanswered. Yea you could get guesses and throw some parts at it but it may not fix the issue.

It could be the starter grinding on the fly wheel. Possibly some teeth are missing and the starter will start spinning in the section the grind when it hits teeth again.

sounds like the engagement gear is not retracting on the starter every once in awhile... may want to check that out before it causes damage to the flywheel.

does the engine actually start and you get the noise or did I read it wrong?

if its DURING cranking, its likely what ranger said. shouldn't be any missing teeth because it would send. false signal to the crank sensor and it wouldn't even start.
